Minutes of the ISOLDE Physics Group Meeting, March 15th 2017

There were no comments to the minutes of the previous meeting.

Technical news

  • The technical meeting is back to the regular format.
  • Cleaning is ongoing in the class A area of b. 179. Tests of the new ventilation system are ongoing for 3 weeks. RP are also checking the radiation monitors.
  • In the target area the concrete is being cut in order to install cameras for visual feedback during target changes. The camera will have the ability to move up and down between a parking position and the observation point, in order to reduce radiation damage.
  • Cooling-water tests are ongoing in the BTY line.
  • There was a power cut on Thursday morning in the ISOLDE hall, which seriously affected operations and produced a one-two day delay. What made things worse was that following the power cut some software updates did not apply properly.
  • There was an air leak on the HRS target which was previously installed. A new target with a VD5 source was installed this morning.
  • Separator setup continues on GPS.
  • There are problems with the timing synchronization of REX.
  • There is an ongoing maintenance of turbo pumps in the hall. Visit organizers should check if beamlines are open in the scheduled time slot, which would make the hall off limits for visitors.
  • RILIS is setting up and preparing for the cold check-out.

Safety

  • Alexander Dorsival and Ulli Köster will be travelling to Bern for discussions with the OFSP concerning the new collection chamber at ISOLDE. Some irradiation tests might be required before the collections are approved.
  • The yearly safety inspection of b. 275 will take place on March 30th.
  • The door in b. 275 is often found open, without a clear sign of someone being in. If no one is in, this makes the building vulnerable to theft. It would be good to remedy this problem, however locking every time when exiting the building creates a safety hazard for the people possibly left inside.  Until a better solution is found, if not sure whether someone is in the building, it would be better to leave the door open.

Schedule

  •  This year’s schedule is practically ready. Some last discussions are ongoing.

Visits

  • The participants in the NUPECC Meeting on Friday last week appreciated very much the ISOLDE visit. Thanks to all people who helped out with the organization.
  • There will be no group visits next week, only the visit of a physicist from GANIL, organized by Bertram Blank.
  • It is possible that in the future visitors will be required to sign a table containing their names.
  • Kara suggested to move the active dosimeters used for visits to the Traka box in the old control room, which would allow more easily tracing them.

AOB

  • The hot water in the coffee room of b. 26 is being reinstalled.
  • The key of the electronics lab in b. 275 is now SC40. Magda ordered a fume extractor, which was a requirement of safety.
  • The deadline for selecting summer students is Sunday night. There will be a meeting tomorrow at 9:30 for discussing project priorities and recommended students.

Seminar

  • The meeting was followed by the seminar of Georgi Georgiev from CSNSM, Orsay on "Nuclear moments, from ground states to short-lived excited states, using radioactive ion beams".

The next PG meeting will take place on Wednesday, March 22nd, at 14:00. It will be followed by a seminar by Wenjia Huang from CSNSM Orsay on "Introduction to the Atomic Mass Evaluation".
