Minutes from ISOLDE Physics Group meeting, 4th May 2016.

No comments to the minutes from the previous PG meeting:

Technical news:

ISOLDE:

  • Friday morning around 5:50 a weasel caused a transformer to arc/spark causing electrical disturbance which affected CERN and took out the ISOLDE target heating on the running HRS.
  • Monday morning there was a power cut in Swiss Geneva area affecting the Linac2 and caused delays.
  • NOTE: Next week: Do not enter the hall or minimise your stay in the hall in the mornings from 0800 – 0830 due to Medical and SSP collections on the GLM and GHM. Until Thursday 12th May - A high activity is expected!

  • GPS:
    • Was running Mg for SSP – emission channelling.
    • There were some confusion with Mass-markers and pin connections.
    • The Proton request switch in the old control room did only turn on the request light bulb and did not send the request. This causes confusion.
      • (note: this hasn’t yet been fixed) This will be looked into and fixed.
    • The GPS is now ready for Medical and SSP rare earth collections.

  • HRS:
    • After the target change on HRS the HT power supplies of GPS (at 30 keV) and HRS (at 50 keV) were discovered to have been switched. This was not indicated from the readout and the reason is still unknown. The problem fixed itself after a reboot of the front end computers…
      • It will  be investigated.
    • Has been running Ni for COLLAPS.

  • RILIS:
    • Had a busy week switching setups between GPS and HRS.
    • The Mg run on GPS was a success.
    • The Ni run on HRS was not so successful due to lower than expected yields.
      • RILIS Support was called once due to a yield drop.
    • Now setting up for Dy on GPS.

  • REX/HIE:
    • REX is working well.
    • Cryo-module has been aligned and ready for cooling next week.
  • Target:
    • Production is on track.
      • There could be a bottle-neck at the end of May.

Physics:

  • SSP emission channelling.
    • Had a good run with Mg on GHM.
    • Could confirm previous findings/results despite beam contamination.

  • COLLAPS measured Ni in the N=40 area from HRS.
    • The measurements were challenging due to underperforming target (target with a graphite line).
      • The yields dropped further after a restart of the target heating after the electrical incident.
      • Optimised target performance by timed trigger to limit Gallium beam contamination. Shooting protons directly on target was better than shooting on the converter.
    • Got data on 68-Ni and 70-Ni.
    • The new DAQ system performed well.

Safety:

  • ISOLDE:
  • To repeat:
    • Do not enter the hall or minimise your stay in the hall (in the mornings from 0800 – 0830) the next days due to Medical and SSP collections on the GLM and GHM. Until Thursday 12th May - A high activity is expected!
  • Access to ISOLDE controlled area - the 10 min login delay is temporary cancelled.

  • VISITS:
    • Today we had a VIP visit from the Portuguese science minister.
    • The new established visitors route in the hall is ready to be inspected.

AOB:

  • Detector project:
    • A Master student is looking for a project at ISOLDE. His background is working with detectors. He will stay for 7 month. Please contact Maria.

The next ISOLDE PG meeting will be held on 11. May 2016 followed by a seminar by ?TBD?
