Minutes from ISOLDE Physics Group meeting, 20th April 2016.

Technical news:

ISOLDE:

  • There was a technical stop 13th  April. This allowed for some INCA software updates.
    • Updates went mostly smoothly.
    • Mostly graphical interface updates.
  • New control room is in use.
    • Some operations still needs to be handled in the old control room (e.g. cooling water), but does not involve operation by USERS.
  • NOTE: When changing the mass – Press ENTER 2 times and keep an eye on the changing value: check that the fields set on the magnets match the field for the desired mass
    • This bug will be investigated and fixed.
  • VISTAR: Keep an eye on the proton integrator (Int.beam) on the VISTAR – please report if this is not running. This number is important to know the “age/usage” of the targets and for safety.
  • GPS:
    • There were many problems with the line heating –  It was impossible to heat it as desired.
    • The cause of the problem was identified Monday – 3 combined issues were found.
      • 1. An isolating block was not properly attached and a screw was touching a cable.
      • 2. The clamping interlock did not connect correctly
      • 3. There were problems with the target clamping table which had not moved as far as expected, and eventually became jammed.
      • The problems are now being repaired, but an intervention will be needed to install a repair on both separators.
    • A UCx target was installed on Monday evening which will be used for collections
    • The GPS VISTAR has been updated to show GHM/GLM deflector plate status (in/out).
  • RILIS:
    • Had a good Cr run and is now setting up for Cu.
  • REX/HIE:
    • The 9-gap power supply has been tested and performs as expected.
      • There will be some meetings to discuss the running conditions in cooperation with the RF group to allow for safe operation, while also serving physics.
    • Cryo-module 1 arrived back on Tuesday and is now being aligned and installed.

Physics:

  • ISOLTRAP finished the Cr beam with success.
    • Measured neutron rich 59-Cr out to 63-Cr. 59-Cr they already saw in 2014. They are interested in the island of inversion around N=40 (IS532).
    • The MR-tof they could identify contaminations (CaF, ScO..) and isolate the Cr beam.
    • Maxim presented some preliminary results for different isotopes up to 63-Cr.
  • The next experiment is CRIS measuring neutron rich 76-78-Cu with the CRIS technique.
    • Want to measure hyperfine structures.
    • Will use a new laser tuner setup.

Safety:

  • 508:
    • It is recommended to install controlled access (card reader) to the SSP labs.
      • Currently looking into the budget.
    • The new control room should have locked doors/controlled access.
  • VISITS:
    • There will be 8 people from the Netherlands on Friday. The visit will be led by Erwin.

AOB:

  • 275:
    • The new floor in the old solid state lab is being installed and it should be possible to move equipment into the lab, from next week.
    •
  • There is a new meeting every morning at 08:45:
    • A 5 min small technical/status coffee meeting will take place in 508 kitchen or CR.
      • Those interested are welcome to join e.g. those running that week or about to start.
  • E-logbook: Please when writing in the e-logbook make it as clear/good and scientific as possible.
    • Also please write even the smallest change in the e-logbook. This could be of important for debugging a later problem.
  • Lights will be installed on the stairway outside 508 and the ISOLDE entrance (Karl will look into the status).

The next ISOLDE PG meeting will be held on 27. April 2016 followed by a seminar by

Heinz Haas, "Nuclear quadrupole moments from solid state theory".
