Minutes from ISOLDE Physics Group meeting, 13th April 2016

No comments to the minutes from the previous PG meeting:

Technical news:

CERN Technical STOP on the injector chain today Wednesday 13th  April.

ISOLDE:

  • Work and tests on the BTY proton line have finished (some steering update) and it is  good shape.
  • Please empty the SAS before Monday – Cryomodule 1 will arrive Tuesday 19th April.
  • There will be an INCA update tomorrow (mostly graphical interface).
  • The new control room was used with success for the first time.
  • GPS:
    • The target did not perform well during collection of 7-Be.
    • Problems with the line heating (detected by RILIS)
    • Could be a misalignment of the line (from handling or transport damage).
    • Target was inspected Friday – saw cables with bad/aged insulation.
      • Was repaired Monday, but this did not help with the line heating problem.
    • An empty target can heat the line
    • Now a well-known trusted UCx target will be installed for more test of line heating.
    • On the GPS working set the GPS magnet show a fault/error read-out. This is not a problem, but is because the old module is still installed but not connected, in case we need to revert to the old hardware at some stage
    • A new GPS VISTAR indicates the GLM/GHM deflector plate status (in or out). Need to improve color for better reading of the screen, but it will be released soon
  • HRS:
    • The HT recovery time (New HT modulator) was test under high level of safety.
      • First results are promising: 1.5 ms recovery time and lower ripples were measured.
      • The HT was tested at 30 kV
    • HRS will start running with protons this week.
  • RILIS:
    • Setting up for Cr.
    • Has new operation for the on-call mode. Bruce will instruct about this at next meeting and also describe the RILIS status application.
  • REX/HIE:
    • The 9-gap power supplies installation is ongoing. Aims to be ready next week.
    • Stable beam for HIE will be late July.
    • Cryomodule 1 will arrive Tuesday and installation will follow.
      • Please empty the SAS by Monday
  • Target:
    • Production of the upcoming units is on track.

Physics:

  • Be collection for n_ToF (CERN) and SARAF (Israel) were performed.
    • Collection was delayed due to numerous issues with GPS and the target itself
    • A source of 20 MBq (wanted 1 GBq) for n_ToF was produced over on Monday night.
  • LA2 has the (future) new tape station installed.
    • It is being aligned and should be ready for tests next week.
  • Tomorrow Cr beam for ISOLTRAP.
    • Depending on the yields, they want to go from neutron rich 59-Cr out to 63-Cr. 59-Cr they already saw in 2014. Are interested in the Island of inversion in this region.
  • Next week  on GPS there will be a used UCx unit for collections of Po for PSI and tests on REXTRAP.

Safety:

  • ISOLDE:
    • Please wear the helmet and safety shoes all the time in the hall.
      • Do not remove the helmet when sitting in front of a pc etc.
    • A few safety shoes (with disinfection spray) will be bought to be used for short term visits to the hall.
    • Where to store all the shoes is still being discussed – possible in a cabin in the old control room.
    • There is now a dedicated storage unit for used solvents etc. outside 170 (especially relevant to the groups using dyes for lasers).
    • It is also now possible to use the chemical Lab in 508 for dye preparation. Check with Juliana first.
    • Bruce (from RILIS) is the new AT sector laser officer.

  • 275:
    • The building got the old key back – 1331 AC1.
  • VISITS:
    • The VISIT path inside the hall is soon in place and accepted (meeting tomorrow).
      • Information/instructions will be send out by Kara.
    • From now on we will also need a list of names of all the visitors.

AOB:

  • Summer student project:
    • Please send the Name and arrival date of your summer student to Vladimir.
  • The electrical safety course is now mandatory in order to enter ISOLDE, and will be linked to the training catalogue in July.
  • Courses will be held once per week.
    • A list of course days will be visible (or link) on the ISOLDE page.
    • The courses for access ISOLDE will be held even for a single person.
  • Many thanks for the contribution to the ISOLDE News Letter.
  • New Ph.D. student from York will enter the CERN Ph.D. programme: Welcome to Robert Harding. He will work on the lasers for VITO/COLLAPS with Magda.
  • NOTE that it should not be difficult to pick up again your dosimeter even if your Medical certificate expires in the next 5-6 month. This is being followed up.

The next ISOLDE PG meeting will be held on 13 April 2016 followed by a seminar by Bruce Marsh, "RILIS capabilities and operational constraints for 2016".
