Minutes from ISOLDE Physics Group meeting, 6th April 2016.

No comments to the minutes from the previous PG meeting:

Technical news:

ISOLDE has entered the last week of setup and cold checks. This week the SEM grid tests (used for tuning the protons from the booster to both HRS and GPS targets) were taking place.

There will be a CERN Technical STOP on the injector chain on Wednesday 13. April.

ISOLDE:

  • There were some issues with the proton steering from the Booster.
  • GPS:
    • HT has been tested at max. 30 keV
    • Still some minor issues with the extraction electrode.
      • This time due to a database update.
    • Magnet: Mass change takes 30 sec. but looks stable.
  • HRS:
    • Is in fairly good shape.
    • Is running stable at 60 keV (with no protons on target).
      • HT pulsing has also not been applied.
    • The updated 1 ms recovery of the HT will be tested on Thursday using the target which is already online for the ISOLTRAP Cr run next week.
    • The HRS VISTAR info screen is not updating correctly. Will be fixed this week.
    • RFQ:
      • Amplifiers have been upgraded: attenuators have been added, which should protect the amplifier in the event of power cuts etc.
      • Interlocks have been updated to prevent damage.
      • These updates need to be tested, as does the bunching before the CRIS run. It should be done at the end of this week or at the start of next.
    • Mass markers on the COLLAPS target seems to crosstalk when taking voltage.
      • A voltage between two mass markers can be measured.
      • This means the applied voltage on the mass marker is actually lower, as some voltage is also send through the other mass marker.
      • This has to be cheeked further.
  • RILIS:
    • Tellurium tests done. Achieved a high total efficiency of 18%.
  • REX/HIE:
    • The EBIS is cold and running. Beam will enter next week.
    • The 9-gap power supplies installation is ongoing. Ready next week.
    • The flow of the ventilation system (no AC cooling) was checked.
  • Control room:
    • The big yellow proton request indication light in the old control room has been disconnected (does not turn on) due do the new controls.
      • This indication light will be re-connected to the request switch

Physics:

  • The start up schedule of physics has been a bit shuffled, due to minor start up issues.
  • The prototype Sigradur© target container will be installed later. A standard UCx will be used.
  • First physics is the collection of 7Be for a pure target production.
    • Separation and production of the target material was performed at PSI.
    • Concerns about unknown 7Li ratio contamination, that will be checked by turning the RILIS lasers on/off.
    • Neutron cross section measurements will be made at n_ToF (CERN) and SARAF (Israel).
  • The solid state diffusion chamber will be checked and used for thin film solar cells and geological feldspar diffusion studies.

Safety:

  • ISOLDE:
    • Please indicate/label possible radioactive equipment in the new yellow cage transport buffer zone next to the SAS (people will work further away).
  • 275:
    • The leaking roof has been repaired.
    • The restriction to enter b. 275 has been removed and so does the special lock of the entrance door. The entrance has now the key installed last summer, n. 1331. Hopefully the floor for the old SS lab will be placed next week (action S. Auerbach).
    • RP will check the remaining rooms until the building is fully declassified.
    • Please keep the door close, none necessarily locked to the still supervised rooms (yellow sign).
    • ONE CANNOT move equipment from 508 to 275 without appropriate RP checks.
  • VISITS:
    • There are a lot of activities regarding safety and visits: the aim is to define a clear and safe path for visiting groups.
    • As a result, visits to the ISOLDE hall are currently on hold until this is finalised.
      • As part of the clean-up some temporary fences or barriers will be used to prevent visitors being exposed to running equipment.

AOB:

  • Summer student project:
    • 2nd round of summer student selection is now open. Deadline Monday.
  • Conferences:
    • ISOLDE will sponsor the participation to:

EPS Divisional Conference on EURISOL-DF, Leuven, Belgium http://eurisoldf2016.be/

  • The sponsorship applies to both ISOLDE locals and group members.

The next ISOLDE PG meeting will be held on 13 April 2016 followed by a seminar by

Smarajit Triambak, "Fundamental symmetries and nuclear structure - some examples from the Global South".
