20 January 2016

Minutes from ISOLDE Physics Group meeting, 20th January 2016.

No comment to the minutes from the previous PG meeting:

Technical news:

There is a lot of shutdown work on-going.

  • GPS: The Faraday cage piston. The reason  why it was stuck is still unknown (it took 2 persons to pull it free) but will be further investigated.
    • The piston will be replaced with a similar system before start-up. An alternative piston mechanism is being prepared, but will not be ready in time for this year..

  • Targets HT:
    • Working on a new prototype modulator. During lab tests it shows very promising performance and has a better recovery time.
      • But also needs a real live performance test at ISOLDE. Likely to be made at the very start-up.
    • Following repair, all 4 power HT supplies are now operational (at the end of 2015 only 2 were working). So 60 KV should be available again.

Physics:

  • Beam requests are sent.
    • Deadline 2nd of February, so that beam time can be discussed at the INTC meeting; end of that week is also possible.
    • Beam time for low energy: 11th April to middle August.
      • After this,  priority is given to HIE.

Safety:

  • 508:
    • Building ventilation is working poorly.
    • Chemical-lab: Ventilation of the chemical cupboards and eye washer installation should finish on the intervention:
      • POWER-CUT 26. JAN for 4 hours starting at 08:00 in the morning.
  • USERS-training:
    • There will be no changes to the access training courses for ISOLDE.
      • Remember to keep training updated and inform users before coming.
    • Renewals of training will be implemented.
      • 1st renewals after ~ 3 years will be an electronic on-line course.
      • After longer time (probably 6 years) new hands-on training will be needed.
    • Crane course: 21. March in French. Next in English is 30. May.
    • Workshop 508 course: There will be several hands-on courses of 2 h duration in February for groups of 5 people.

AOB:

  • 3 students from Slovakia will participate of ISOLDE activities and arrive 29. Jan.
    • Matus Sedlak, Jozef Klimo, Robert Urban.
    • All now have projects.
  • A new updated nuclear chart is out (44 – 50 EUR). If you want to share the shipping cost (the main expense ~100 EUR), contact Frank.
  • Upcoming Conference Abstract deadlines :
    • Nuclei in the Cosmos XIV 19-24 June 2016, Toki Messe, Niigata, Japan:
      • deadline January 31, 2016
    • HYPERFINE 2016, Leuven, July 3-8, 2016:
      • deadline March 2016
    • Direct Reactions with Exotic Beams (DREB) 2016, Halifax, Canada
      • Deadline 14 February 2016
  • CERN training:
    • COMSOL Workshop: Particles in Electromagnetic Fields: February 9, 2016
      • Free: Advertised through the cern-electronics e-group.

Please note that the next ISOLDE PG meeting will be held on Tuesday 26th January at 15:30. This is to accommodate the Coulex School which will run from 27 to 29 January next week.  If you plan to join the school and you have not register yet please do it a.s.a.p.(http://indico.cern.ch/event/458268/)

There will be a seminar from Akira Miyazaki, "What happened to the HIE-ISOLDE power coupler? – Observation, analysis, and solution"
