13 January 2016

Minutes from ISOLDE Physics Group meeting, 13th January 2016.

No comment to the minutes from the previous PG meeting:

ISOLDE:

  • 4000 L dewar.
    • The last steps of commissioning will be followed up by Frank and Karl.
  • Damaged door in 508 workshop.
    • Will be followed up by Laura and Maria. Contact CERN transport for insurance repair.
    • Should be repaired before 20th Jan, as insulation will be installed. Unfortunately is taking longer time so we will delay the installation of insulation in the emergency doors.

Technical news:

There was the first ISOLDE technical meeting this week.

There is a lot of shutdown work on going.

  • ISOLDE:
    • Last Saturday old and non-working targets were moved to the storage area in the ISR. The shipping was performed with low dose and RP are satisfied.
  • GPS:
    • The Faraday cage piston has been repaired (had problems opening the cage).
    • Controls have been upgraded. The magnet cycle now takes 30 s (before 10 s). Maybe it will be made faster in the future. Important is a stable and reliable system.

  • MEDICIS: A better target shielding has been put in place.
  • Front-end: Modifications/repairs will be performed from February as in 2015 there were many problems with the coupling system during target changes.
  • Targets: Production goes as planned.
    • Working on optimising (speeding up) the UCx nano-carbon structure production.
    • Will also keep the old UCx production design (less time consuming).
    • Group is low on ThO.
  • HIE: The Cryo-module was transported back to the clean room in SM18 for repair last Friday.
  • New Yellow cage: Located in the hall next to the SAS is a buffer-zone for shipping material out of the ISOLDE hall.
    • All potential radioactive contaminated elements and stuff will be waiting in this zone for RP-check before further shipping.

275:

  • Organization of the SSP room has finished.

508:

  • Laser-labs: Work on the water will begin Monday (start with finding a cut tube on the ISOLDE-side (will require scaffolding)).
  • Chemical lab:
    • Installation of the eye wash and ventilation of the chemical cupboard should take place Thursday. Estimated duration: 1 week.

Safety:

  • 508: Safety visit at the chemical lab on Friday at 10:00.

AOB:

  • Beam request will begin at Friday and the deadline is early February.
    • In parallel with the beam request the last 5 years of ISOLDE-related publications are being requested. This is in order to update the ISOLDE Publication records and facilitate its implementation at the Library. This can improve the visibility of ISOLDE.
      • In particular, PhD theses which have emerged from ISOLDE experiments are requested. The current selection is very incomplete.
  • 3 new students from Slovakia will participate of ISOLDE activities for 2 months until the end of March.
    • One will join the target group and another the building of neutron detector.
    • The 3rd student is missing a project. Please write Maria if you have a suggested project/programme.
  • 19 proposals for INTC has been received and will be discussed 3.-4. Feb. 2016.

Signs which will be placed at each experiment at ISOLDE were presented by Kara and discussed. The font and the design was decided upon.

Next ISOLDE PG meeting at 14:00 the 20. Jan 2016. There will be a seminar from Prof. Artur W Carbonari, "Manufacture of ZnO microtubes decorated with nanowires and nanosticks and characterization by PAC spectroscopy"
