25 November 2015

Minutes from ISOLDE Physics Group meeting, 25th November 2015.

There were no comments to the minutes from the previous PG meeting last week.

Technical news:

No more protons for ISOLDE until next year.

  • GPS:
    • Target was installed for the separator courses.
    • Target change was problematic. A now recurrent yet intermittent problem of being unable to open the target Faraday cage (closing the cage this time was no problem).
      • The TELEMAX needed to be used, and the cage was opened.
      • High priority to fix the cage door. “Good timing” of the problem as we enter the shutdown, where the problem will be investigated and fixed.
  • HRS:
    • The proton irradiated (activated) target from MEDICIS is now mounted cold in HRS.
  • RILIS:
    • Testing new laser schemes on the activated MEDICIS target on the HRS, without heating.
      • Non-successful, as they got too low efficiency. They wanted to make tests for Radon/Neon.
    • A new laser has arrived which is being setup. This will be used for future Se, Cr, Gd, …
  • HIE:
    • Before shut down a max full power at 6 mV/meter test was performed for 1 h with success.
    • The Cryo-module is now warming up for the planned removal.

Physics:

  • MINIBALL: Installed and tested a new sensitive electron spectroscopy detector (SPEDE) using stable beams.
    • They had many investigations and optimisations.
    • The SPEDE detector could only tolerate 1/3 of the powering up, as it started to oscillate due to noise.
    • All in all a valuable learning process. The setup will most likely go back to Finland where modifications will be made.
  • Test of HIE beam line 2, XT02:
    • The line had the first official commissioning of beam (1-2 h of stable 12-C and 14-N) on the chamber.
      • Success and transmission looks promising.

Safety:

  • The fence for the work zone is back (removal of the Cryo-module/tunnel). Limit your use of the zone and enter with helmet and closed shoes. Close the fence if open.
  • LN2 exchange of dewars after 17:00 when possible.
  • The card reader for the ISOLDE Jura entrance of building 170 has been removed.
  • Dosimeter access for the 508 controlled area (bottom floor) is in place and working.

508:

  • Kitchen installation is on going.
  • The new ISOLDE control room is being setup.
  • New meeting table in the visitor’s area.
  • Door handles have been fixed, but the door to ground floor controlled areas is still hard.
  • Please keep the area below stair case empty and clean.
    • There are some wooden boxes that have to be removed.

275:

  • Contaminated pieces are in the process to be dismounted and moved for safe storage or more likely disposed.

Visits:

  • Many visits this year – a record!
  • The statistics from Kara: 2014: 742 visitors and 2015: 840 visitors!
    • A big thanks to Kara, and the volunteers/guides/presenters helping out.
  • Maria plans to make a Video (max 10 min. length) of the ISOLDE hall and its experiments.
    • Be ready with a short script/presentation of your experiment at the beginning of next year. Before April.
    • Label your experiment in the Hall – try to use a common font/design. Action during Jan/Feb.

AOB:

  • The ISOLDE Workshop will start next week.
    • Please, the students should help out as much as possible during the workshop and for preparations.
  • A photo carousel will likely be made for the last day of the workshop (Friday).
    • If you have pictures you want to share they can be sent to Jenny.

There will be no ISOLDE PG meeting next Wednesday, due to the ISOLDE Workshop 2015.
