16 September 2015

Minutes from ISOLDE Physics Group meeting, 16th September 2015.

From last minutes, there were a correction to the Physics on the notated decay scheme. Has been corrected in the minutes online.

Technical news:

All in all a good week at ISOLDE with only minor issues. A good week for the new operator in full charge of ISOLDE – Emanuele Matli.

  • ISOLDE:
    • The balloons were emptied Friday.
      • It was performed a bit too quick, resulting in minor vacuum problems, tripping some power supplies and closing VAT valves. No serious consequences, but being investigated.
    • Wednesday the scanners refreshed very slow (1-2 min.) in standard application. Friday they behaved normal again. Unknown reason – but likely due to delays between program layers.
      • In case use the Expert Application (similar usage) to operate the scanners, since this application “should not be affected by the delay” between program layers.
    • Scanner on CCO (SC0800) does not indicate the beam, but only background/noise. To be investigated.
    • Target production: Due to a CERN software update of Lab-view, the auto process of carbonation broke. Has been fixed. No delays.

  • GPS:
    • The Line heating trips/power down a few times. Unknown reason – keep an eye on status on VISTAR.
    • UCx target installed.
      • Proton scan and stable beam Monday.
  • HRS:
    • ISOLTRAP taking beam.
  • HIE/REX:
    • First beam through the cryo-module with success (transmission mode from REX, i.e. Cavities off but the solenoid was on).
    • Vacuum leak in a (small) diag. box due to colliding scanner and Faraday cup.
      • Interlock has been put in place (was forgotten) since there is not room for both inserted into the beam.
    • RP: Moving some RP-monitors to different locations.
  • RILIS:
    • Reports no problems. Running 34Mg and 34Al for ISOTRAP.
      • Saw unusually high surface ionisation ratio. To be investigated by Target group.
    • Almost back at full laser operation. Missing an Edgewave pumping laser (From USA).
    • Will setup for Mn and Ga.

Physics:

  • IDS: Reports of a good beam time on 34Mg and 34Al. Now setting up for 68Mn from GPS.
  • ISOLTRAP: Reports of a good beam time to measure the mass of the two isomers in 34Al. Measured events very good (few counts per hour), but on the S/N limit.
  • Mossbauer: Will take 57Mn from GPS after IDS.

508:

  • The Kitchen has been ordered.
  • Still problems with bad door handles – ticket has been opened.

Safety:

  • Please help to keep the two zones of the ISOLDE hall. The two zones makes it a lot easier (less ISOLDE training) for workers to access to HIE installation.
    • Close the fence! Limit movement in the Work area.
  • 275:
    • De-contamination by RP will start next week.

AOB:

  • Announcement: From 1st October Juliana Schell will be the new ISOLDE Solid State Physics Coordinator, replacing Karl Johnston.
  • Status on things send to long term storage – they are accepted.
  • A mouse (small and fluffy and not a rat) has been observed in the Hall. Action will be taken.
    • Please report any similar events.
  • A 2nd vacuum cleaner is planned for the 508 building.
  • Recommendation from Maria on the PIASKI conference, interesting program, a lot of interactions and discussions, plenty of things to do in the lunch break.
  • Deadline for abstract submission for the Bormio Conference the 25th of September
  • In-house group: please remind the users that ISOLDE access training courses are only on Tuesdays.

The next ISOLDE PG meeting has not been announced, but will likely be next Wednesday 23rd Sep. at 14:00. There will be a seminar from Helfried Burckhar about Energy issues at CERN.
