02 September 2015

Minutes from ISOLDE Physics Group meeting, 2nd September 2015.

There were no comments to the minutes from the previous PG meeting last week.

Technical news:

  • GPS:
    • Target and line heating. Heavy outgassing observed.
    • Sunday – stable beam to IDS with a record 90% transmission, after using the automatic tuner. Monday the beam was sent to users.
    • The 300A offset of the line heating has disappeared, and now working normaly.

  • HRS:
    • The target survived well a long ISOLTRAP run.
    • Fluctuating power supply to beam element going to IDS, is not disturbing the beam transmission, so it will be fixed during the shutdown.
    • ISOCOOL: Beam losses are being checked. 65% of transmission with U in transmission mode can be achieved looking at the FC before (FC490) and after (FC690) ISOCOOL.
    • Magnet cycling is 8 min. fast, then 2 min. of fine tuning the magnet.
      • More digits on the mass read-out have been added (to return to a situation from a few months ago), because jumping of field readout and beam position has been observed. So far the magnets were working fine.
    • The slits are working.

  • ISOLDE:
    • CERN Technical stop this Tuesday and Wednesday. No protons.
    • Software for Pow PLC ISOLDE power supplies will be upgraded on Wednesday. Targets will be cooled down beforehand.
    • Line heating went immediately to the final values (with no steps) after it tripped. Likely cause: the value was not set to 0A before starting the step heating.
    • RILIS
      • The controller of the 2nd broken laser has been fixed by the company, and will be soon shipped back.
      • The laser chiller has probably a small leak, since it turns off from time to time. To be investigated.
      • Thanks to RILIS who provided an unplanned ionization of Tl for ISOLTRAP.

Physics:

  • IDS: Had great success using the Auto Beam optimizer. Did not lose beam at any time.
    • Manual tuning for 40-50% transmission. Then after Auto tuner 90-95% by tuning each sector (recipe) only into the IDS FC.
    • Already getting good statistics on 34Mg decay and the run is going well.
  • ISOLTRAP: Added to their setup the decay station from CRIS and worked fine.
    • The run closed two experiments: on 195,197,199Po and 202Tl

275:

  • Building will be checked for contamination. Starting on the 1st floor and SSP lab. RP will need access to walls, floors and things will likely need to be moved.

Safety:

  • ISOLDE RP-training has two registered users for 8th September.
  • The separation of the ISOLDE hall (ISOWORK area) will be lifted at the end of the year.
    • Please keep the fences closed if seen open.
    • Limit movement in the ISOWORK area.

AOB:

  • 508: Doors handles have been repaired by company.
    • Please report any still misbehaviour of them ASAP. -> it seems like they are not working well any more.
  • For the ISOLDE Workshop 2-4. December, there will be prizes for best Presentation/ Poster. You are encouraged to submit a contribution.
  • CERN photo walk 25th September. Need 2 persons to help out – contact Kara.
  • Please check your LN2 container safety valves and let Magda if the periodic-verification time has passed.

The next ISOLDE PG meeting has been announced, and will be next Wednesday 9th Sep. at 14:00. There will be a seminar from Stephane Grevy at 14:30 “IS530 and IS567: Unveiling the properties of intruder states in 34Al and 34Si”.
