24 June 2015

Minutes from ISOLDE Physics Group meeting, 24 June 2015.

There were no comments to the minutes from the previous PG meeting last week.

Technical news:

  • GPS:
    • Bio-physics run stopped Friday, with no success on physics (bad targets). But was a good practice of procedures and using the new lab facilities in 508.
    • Mossbauer group saw a little of 119Ag (estimated to be 1/50 of expected). Used the beam shortly to produce the first 119Sn emission Mossbauer spectrum from 119Ag.
    • This week GPS is preparing for negative beams (Cl and I etc.).
      • During the beam optics polarity change, there can also be no HT or protons on HRS.
      • Will run for 2 week and perform physics at Isolde tape station, GLM and LA1

  • HRS
    • New UCx target behaved nicely for RILIS-ionised Cu run.
    • ISOTRAP had a good run (will give feedback next week).
    • CRIS followed after, just started (will give feedback next week).
    • Magnets cycling issues since the technical stop last Monday. The power goes from external to internal mode. Software or hardware problem, likely software since both power supplies have problems at the same time, just after the technical stop (software update). Being followed up by our engineers in charge.
    • Run stops on Sunday.
      • Then there will be a 2 week opening (due to the GPS negative run) for a closer inspection of the HRS line. Diagnostic boxes, ISCOOL (test for 50 kV) and the magnets.
    • Slits are working ok (none stuck).

  • Issues:
    • Wednesday both HRS and GPS (during machine development) did not get protons from booster and afterwards the beam profile was strange: due to proton beam elements to ISOLDE were turned off (likely from the technical stop Monday). Friday it was solved and back to normal.
    •  ISCOOL:
      • Within the next 1-2 weeks start inspecting and repairing diag. boxes. This can replace the leaking FC in front of ISCOOL. LABS for repair have become available.
    • Vacuum software in ISOLDE CR: Does not allow correct and exact commands from user. Valves need Manual Expert mode in order to respond. Does not react to bad vacuum on one side. Looks like this problem applies to the whole HRS line. In case contact operators if needed.
    • Note that if the FC Profibus switch is not set correctly for one FC in the hall, the FCs behind it will not respond at all of move and read commands. .

  • HIE-ISOLDE
    • Now the SC cavities have also started to be cooled. All looks fine.
    • Started applying RF that will produce X-rays, so RP measurements from the line has started.
    • Meetings on the progress and possible start of physics will be held next week.

  • RILIS
    • Carbon-deposit on mirrors from high-power Laser. Need cleaning that will be performed end of July to gain the optimum light transmission.

  • Safety
    • Yearly safety inspection: Miguel will be the main responsible.
      • ISOLDE: Wednesday 1. July 14:00 till ca 16h.
      • 508: Wednesday 8. July 13:00.
        • In case of questions during the inspection the responsible for the experiment should be present.

  • 508:
    • The machine workshop now has a yellow folder with machine and tool instructions.
      • NOTE: Summer students are not allowed to use the machines.
    • Detector room: No storage due to upcoming neutron-detector work.

  • VISITS:
    • Access to ISOLDE have to be announced and approved by Magda, Richard, and RP (friends, families etc.), but better to show them ISOLDE from 508 window.

AOB:

  • Summer students have all a dosimeter, without problems when asking for them.
  • The presentations at the 50th INTC meeting (1st July, 13:30) will be a good opportunity to get updated on the activities and status of ISOLDE. https://indico.cern.ch/event/401239/

The next ISOLDE PG meeting has been announced, and will be next Thursday 2 July at 14:00. Followed by the seminar of Michael Block, "Investigating Atomic and Nuclear Properties of the Heaviest Elements".
