17 June 2015

Minutes from ISOLDE Physics Group meeting, 17 June 2015.

There were no comments to the minutes from the previous PG meeting last week.

Technical news:

  • HRS:
    • A new UCx target has been installed for CRIS and ISOTRAP.
      • The target group would like to investigate this new target when possible (because it is a new UC batch).
    • There is a delay of the target and stable beam, but physics should start as originally planned.
    • VITO and CRIS had stable beam tuning last week and transmission of 85% and 30% was obtained, respectively. This is normal for CRIS to have 30% (in FC4) and for VITO the 85% is a good start.
    • Magnet cycling problem was solved by a software fix. If still problems, try restart magnet and/or restart PC.
    • ISCOOL still gives problems above 30 kV.
      • Vacuum problem is suspected to originate from a leaking FC in front of ISCOOL. The FC cannot be investigated or exchanged since there is no spare FC and the A-Class lab of building 170 needs to be fully functional to repair the FC backup.

  • GPS:
    • SSP users had a good Cd-beam time run, with a pure Cd beam.
      • Good PAC results from the setups.
      • RILIS found an offset of 5 mm during the Cd ionisation.
    • Bio-Physics did not have a good run due to target problems with ISOLDE. A huge effort was made to get beam. 3 different UCx targets were installed in short time.
      • First target had a leak (bad vacuum) above 200 Amps.
      • Second target was shipped fast from storage to ISOLDE. The rush likely broke the target line during transport. Will never repeat the rush again.
      • Third target is the one that crashed onto the HRS front end and behaves not normal (i.e. yield drops shortly after taking full proton intensity).
    • Ag will run until Friday and try make the best out of the beam that can be extracted.

  • HIE:
    • The cryomodule shielding slowly approaches LN2 temperature.
    • All progress looks good and no leaks detected.
    • First beam transport from the REX RFQ to the first diagnostic box on the line in the tunnel was successful (90% transmission).

  • B-508:
    • The Cd run was a good test of the new SSP labs and 508 building and it was learned that improvements can still be made.
      • The furnace room for e.g. annealing of samples is tight, gets very warm and maybe not safe.
      • The transport of implanted samples to the SSP labs is not optimal.
    • The installed cooling of SSP labs is working well.
    • Ventilation in CRIS and COLLAPS laser and DAQ rooms produces water drops – do NOT turn on.
      • Ticket has been made for fixing this.
    • The detector room needs to be emptied from equipment placed there as temporary storage place since it will hold neutron detectors that are soon to arrive.
    • The external doors are difficult to open because of the bad-quality of crash bars. They should be under warranty so DIMENSIONE should get them fixed. Another ticket has been made.
      • Door from ISOLDE to 508 labs has been taped in order not to lock.
      • The door on the 1st floor needs a hard pull on the handle to open it from the outside.

AOB:

  • The ISOLDE summer students have started arriving and where shortly introduced. A warm welcome and we are looking forward working with you.
  • Next week Magda will give a short ISOLDE facility introduction for the summer students
    • Wednesday at 13.30, before the group meeting.
  • A demonstration of the new Auto-tuner for beam optics will be given Friday (19.06.15) at 14:00

The next ISOLDE PG meeting has been announced, and will be next Wednesday 24 June at 14:00. Followed by the seminar of Steven Karataglidis entitled "Alpha scattering in the MCAS."
