10 June 2015

Minutes from ISOLDE Physics Group meeting, 10th June 2015.

There were no comments to the minutes from the previous PG meeting last week.

Technical news

  • HRS
    • IDS did not have a good run. Bad yield of 67-68Mn from the target
    • One more test of the target is ongoing. This target was the one that crashed into the front end.
      • Could be outgassing or the heavy contamination from the Rubidium mass marker.
      • IDS and COLLAPS saw a better yield for fewer protons, which is still not understood.
    • COLLAPS had a good run and a successful collaboration with the RILIS team who provided the laser for optical pumping in the ISCOOL, and completed their program with the exception of 65Mn.
    • Note that the software has lately displayed the High Voltage as OFF, when it is actually ON. This has to be checked manually.
    • Magnet cycling is not behaving and there are issues, the cycling stops or does not respond.
  • GPS
    • Technical stop planned Monday at 8:00, so GPS will stop at 5:00.

Control system will then also be updated.
Will start up again Tuesday evening.

  • HIE
    • Starting the cryo-module is looking good and is now entering the more critical step of cooling it down.
  • B-508:
    • The 111Cd run is a good test of the new SSP-labs.
    • The chemical fume cupboard is currently being installed.
    • The ventilation system is only an On/Off system not to be regulated (not ideal).
      •  Thursday morning it will be inspected.
    • The LASER labs are now with installed sensitive equipment and closed for any installation work in 508 (without consultation before entering).
    • Phones are working and now with the PIN codes.
    • The open broken door – in progress on repair. LASERS do not seems to be affected by temperature variation from the open door (at the moment).

  • Class-A lab is soon online again. This means e.g. that Faraday-cups can be inspected and repaired again.
  • Diagnostic boxes soon to be inspected.
  • Balloons will soon be emptied next week, as they are close to being full.

  • VISIT: NO sample removal or opening of chambers during visits:
    • Director of Nuclear Research at Los Alamos, 11 June, 10:30
    • Polish TV, 11 June. 10:30-12:00.

The next ISOLDE PG meeting will be announced, but will likely be next Wednesday. Followed by the seminar of Janne Pakarinen entitled “Nuclear structure studies in Jyväskylä, Finland”
