Minutes from the ISOLDE Physics Group meeting on May 27th, 2015

No comments to the minutes of the PG meeting held last week.

Technical news •

HRS:

o Physics run at LA1 with 40 keV beam delivered through the ISCOOL.

o The displacement of the beam position behind 2nd magnet observed when changing masses last week improved after Tim Giles reloaded “standard” ion--‐tune settings. o The magnet readout sometimes shows field value 0. Sometimes the beam is still there. Otherwise, a temporary solution is to change mass, and then ask for the original mass immediately after to cause the cycling to the originally desired field value.
o After replacing the two faraday cup diagnostic boxes before and after the ISCOOL one of the cups (in front) did not show any reading and showed another vacuum leak. As of Friday the leak has been blocked with vacuum silicone.
o The ISCOOL transmission for Be/Na was around 50% at 40 keV. The transmission was observed to degrade slowly after initial tune. o The PS Booster proton beam steers in BTY line are being repaired for next week physics run.
o The intervention to replace CA0 and CC0 faraday cups is postponed to later this year, due to no more spares (which were used in the intervention mentioned above). o Users report the XY readout is inverted in the LA0 scanner.
o Users report the slits do not meet at 0. The offset of the slits calibration is different in each side. •

  • The class A laboratory ventilation work is finished. The preparation of new UCX targets will restart in June. •
  • CERN electrical grid suffered a micro-glitch last Sunday. No ISOLDE equipment was affected.

IS541 report •

  • Goal: Measure the beta--‐delayed proton branching ratio of 11Be by implanting it in a copper catcher and measure the amount of 10Be produced using the Atomic Mass Spectrometry setup of the VERA facility in Vienna. •
  • Thirteen catchers were taken to account for different conditions affecting the 11Li and 10Be contamination coming from the source that could contribute to systematic errors in the final determination of the branching ratio. Solid state physics runs at GLM/GHM • Goal: Study of conductive states in the surface of topological insulators. • Mossbauer spectroscopy run: Beam of 119In to GLM. • Emission channel spectroscopy: Parallel run at GHM with 124In.

Schedule •

Safety •

  • The B508 door that access the laser and solid state labs is now permanently closed. Access must proceed from the tourniquet side. •
  • The main entrance of B275 has a new lock. Keys can be requested through Jenny.

B508 •

  • Phones are now installed in B508. •
  • The kitchen budget will be above 5000 CHF, which means a general call and three quotes will be required. •
  • The new projector for the b508 visitors’ room is now in a locked cabinet placed in that room.
  • The key is accessible in the Traka box in the hall’s control room. •
  • Users request information about the status of the tools in 508 workshop. Ermanno Barbero and Julien Thiboud sort and stock the workshop.

‐The next meeting will take place at 14:00 Wednesday next week (3rd June 2015) followed a seminar by Hanne Heylen on the "Spins and g-factors of Mn approaching N = 40" (https://indico.cern.ch/event/390404/ )
