Minutes from the ISOLDE Physics Group meeting on March 4th, 2015

No comments to the minutes of the PG meeting held last week.

Technical news

  • The balloons recuperating gas from the target and separator area were emptied last week.
  • All experimental beamlines are now under vacuum. The beamlines in the separator area are not yet pumped.
  • The alignment point for the HRS frontend was dismounted and mounted back in the new position.
  • ISCOOL:
    • The RF controls are not currently working. It is being investigated.
    • Users ask for clarification on the 2014 transmission efficiency:
      • transmission mode: 100% up to medium masses (tested to  A=138), 50% for 238U.
      • Bunched mode: 50% for light nuclei (tested to A=85); 40% for medium masses (A=138); 15% for 238U.
  • Separator magnet controls:
    •  The new version of the HRS magnet controls was updated, causing crashes.
    • The new control hardware for GPS is ready, but the software is not. GPS will be run with the old controls until later this year (the change can be made in 1 day)
  • The target cooling water panel close to RILIS will be moved above the GRS separator area to alleviate the radiation dose on the RILIS cabin.
  • The ISOLDE overhead crane had one piece deformed by tension when it caught one of HIE-ISOLDE cables.
    • This piece is used to identify the end of the crane rails.
    • Current operations are not recommended due to the safety hazard.
    • The crane will be repaired next week.
  • HIE-ISOLDE:
    • Hardware tests in the tunnel started this week.
    • The power converters in the mezzanine are being tested as well. Access is not allowed during the tests.
    • Requests to clean the extension area for moving the HIE-ISOLDE cryomodule and the installation of MiniBall’s frame.
  • Primary area/class A laboratories:
    • The ventilation  work will finish around May 15th.
    • No new UCX target can be made before the ventilation work is finished.
    • There is material for one target already prepared to be used in April.
  • RILIS:
    • Both laser windows for GPS and HRS have been replaced.
    • Start of offline tests for VADIS source for Gallium ionization.

Safety

  • Access to ISOLDE will be done through the tourniquet using the dosimeter starting next Monday.
  • B508 ground floor will be classified as part of the ISOLDE RP area.
    • The emergency exit on the back of the ground floor should not be used for access. The access will be supervised by an alarm and a CCT camera.
    • The access doors in the solid state laboratory can be used only to bring large equipment in, but not for access into ISODE RP area.
  • The electrical awareness module for the ISOLDE safety and RP course will be given first week of April. Magda will send an email once details are available.

B508

  • The ground floor doors will have new CERN locks installed. Because the doors require special size locks they cannot be fitted with locks compatible with any of current ISOLDE keys.
  • Experiment signal cables:
    • They will enter B508 through Karl’s laser lab, then distributed to the first floor through the visitor’s room.
    • Patch panels will be provided by ISOLDE group.
  • The close water circuit will be installed once the funding for the required chiller is found.

Schedule

  • The separator course has been moved to the week after Easter. A second (shorter) course will be given later for in-house people.
  •

AOB

-The group leader asks for contributions to the ISOLDE newsletter. Deadline March 15th.

-The director of the Instituto Superior Tecnico of Lisbon, will visit the ISOLDE hall and solid state laboratories this Friday.

-The next meeting will take place at 14:00 Wednesday next week (4th March 2015) followed by a seminar by Mieczyslaw Witold Krasny  on “The HIGS proposal and its highlights” (https://indico.cern.ch/event/366297 /).
