Minutes from the ISOLDE Physics Group meeting on March 18th, 2015

No comments to the minutes of the PG meeting held last week.

Technical news

  • GPS:
    • The water cooling circuit showed problems before the target was replaced. No more problems observed with the new target.

    • The target used for 1st beam tuning was installed Wednesday.

      • The GLM/GHM deflectors showed mechanical problems. Being investigated.

    • Alignment of lasers pending.

  • HRS

    • Comissioning of the HRS and ISCOOL is ahead of time.

    • The HRS will have a spare turbopump installed instead of one of the beam line turbopumps (NICOLE or TAS), which are not compatible.

    • Laser transmission test for the aligment to HRS has been completed. GPS transmission test to follow.

    • Beam transmission has been tested up to the exit side of ISCOOL.

    • Faraday cup FC490 has been installed back. Readout current is now more consistent (compared to 2014) with other faraday cups in the vicinity.

  • ISCOOL

    • Transmission for continuous mode was tested this week: 70% for 17Ne, 100% for NatCs.

  • The exhaust balloons were emptied again this week due to a leak in the GPS target.

  • A leak was found on the compressed air for the water cooling station. Fixed.

  • Beam diagnostic graphical interfaces need to be restarted if they are left untouched for long periods. Working on diagnosing the problem.

  • RILIS:

    • The HRS laser shutter will be installed at the end of March.

  • The cabling work between the hall and B508 is ongoing. Due to operation with a cherry-picker it is not recommended to access the area while they use it.

  • The mockup of the cryomodule got transported to ISOLDE and the installation test is ongoing.

  • REX-ISOLDE

    • The linac watercooling system will be reconnected next week.

    • Test with GPS beam scheduled for next week.

  • A power cut affecting target heating was scheduled for Thursday 7:30 to 10:30 am.

Safety

  • Since April 14th, The course required for ISOLDE access will contain an electrical module, 1 to 3 pm. After that the standard RP course will be given.

  • This year the RP and electrical courses will take place once per week, on Tuesdays afternoons.

  • Users that have a valid current RP course will be allowed to enter the hall, but they still need to take the electrical module during their stay at ISOLDE.

Conferences

B508

  • The mechanical machines installed in the workshop will be tested for conformity next week. After they pass the tests they will be available for use. The workshop supervisor will authorize users on a individual machine basis.

  • The newly installed cable trays are properly grounded with Cu wire all along the bottom floor of building 508.

  • The group leader asks the audience to warn her if cracks appear in the walls of the building. Identified in the kitchen wall due to late cabling.

  • The kitchen furnishing is still on going the most probable supplier will be IKEA with a budget of ~3000 CHF plus installation.

  • The outside doors are not compatible with the standard CERN electronic lock. They will be kept as they are and we would like to have electronic closing a budget of the order of 16.000 CHf will have to be found..

  • The Jura side tourniquet is now in principle active for dosimeter access.
