Minutes from the ISOLDE Physics Group meeting on November 6th, 2014

No comments to the minutes from the meetings on October 23rd and 30th.

Technical news

HRS

  • ISOLTRAP run during the weekend with UCx target in order to determine Chromium and Scandium masses.
    • The transfer line broke on Saturday before the Cr run.
  • The new version of the magnet cycling program was tested successfully.
  • Target change, UCx with neutron converter and Ta line for Zn isotopes for CRIS, COLLAPS and CRIS.
  • The HRS laser window was found coated. Intervention to change the HRS laser window on Thursday.
  • One turbo pump in HRS sector 10 was having problems. Fixed.
  • Upcoming next week:
    • Monday morning: RP test of the Medicis converter.
    • Tuesday: Zn isotopes to COLLAPS

GPS

  • New Titanium nano-structure target installed on Monday for physics at LA1.
    • High precision measurement of 37K decay strength until Monday.
    • Monday: test of extraction yields of 55C as fluoride molecule.
  • Magnet settings need to be changed slightly to get 90% transmission to LA1 compared to central beam line. It shows as a 1 mm deviation in the scanner before the CA0-LA0 bender.
  • Collections at LA2 were not possible after the target broke. The LA2 area is still shielded.
  • The target thermocouples are having problems. Being investigated for next week La target.

RILIS

  • The pump laser replacements are expected next week.

Safety

  • Users indicate an ongoing problem of the LN2 refill service missing scheduled dates. Magda will follow up.
  • The ISOLDE external gate was installed in Monday. The tourniquet is not powered yet, it turns freely. Access is still controlled with the CERN badge reader.
  • Magda is meeting Thursday with the responsible of the electrical work at ISOLDE hall. Before any work around permanent experiments they will be contact the person responsible for the setup.
  • Users comment that computer equipment is being moved and disconnected without asking the responsible person.

ISOLTRAP measurement of Sc/Cr masses

  • After no radioactive Scandium was observed ISOLTRAP run Chromium over the weekend.
    • Study the evolution of N=34 subshell closure for Z=22 isotopes.
    • Test the release of Vanadium isotopes and other elements in the region.
  • Yield was high enough to measure 59Cr. With lasers 60Cr would have been possible
    • The transfer line heating broke, reducing surface ionization efficiency.

Miscellanea

  • Call from Maria for one/two slides with 2014’s highlights from the permanent experiments at ISOLDE for CERN’s yearly retreat meeting.
  • COLLAPS lasers were delivered to B508 on Wednesday. No equipment was  damaged in the transport
  • CRIS laser table was delivered at the same time as COLLAPS lasers.
  • The Storage Ring at ISOLDE design document will be finished November 17th.  If/once the document by CERN is approved it will be sent to an architect firm to finalize the blueprints.

Building 508

  • The air conditioning (A/C) system was tested successfully last week during the general inspection.
    • The ventilation fans take some time to start moving after they are switched on.
    • The A/C system has a switch with “heating” and “cooling and ventilation” options. It is not set to the latter.
    • Users report that ventilation air flow on the COLLAPS laser room is imperceptible.
  • The electrical system was inspected on Tuesday/Wednesday
    • Every electrical plug was tested for current and correct phase.
    • Lights work in every room
    • No emergency switch for the building. Every room will have its own.
  • The fire alarm system will be installed in mid-January.
    • The building safety inspection will proceed as planned next week and revisited in January after the fire alarm system is installed.
  • All locks in the building will have a common CERN key.
  • Pending: test internet ports.

Building 275

  • Maria met the person in charge of the committee coordinating the space needs in PH.
  • ISOLDE will keep 100% of B275 until the end of 2014, with 6 more months in case of heavy need.
  • After the move to B508 is completed, ISOLDE will probably keep 50% of B275.
  • Users will be informed during the ISOLDE workshop of the need to move storage space out of B275.
    • All the space in B275 needs to be used for testing, workshop and laboratory rooms
    • Current plan is to declassify the building as radiation zone. There will be one room/area designated as radiation zone.

AOB

The next meeting will take place at 14:30 Thursday next week   (13th November 2014).
