Minutes from the ISOLDE Physics Group Meeting May 15, 2014

Comments to the minutes from the ISOLDE Physics Group Meeting from May 8, 2014:

- “Currently the RILIS machine protection system is being tested and it seems to work correctly. This system will allow for remote work of the RILIS team during the shift hours” should be rephrased to: “Currently, the prototype version of a machine protection system is being installed in the RILIS laser room. Basic hardware functionality tests are underway. The system is intended as a health and safety upgrade which will assist RILIS operators in monitoring and reacting to operational hazards of solvents based dye lasers”.

TECHNICAL NEWS:

- The technical team is aiming at testing the ISOLDE frontends and separators with the stable beam as soon as possible. At first the RILIS laser test and the re-commissioning of the RFQ cooler will take place.

- The works in the target area are delayed by about a month which might have a major impact on the startup of ISOLDE.

- GPS: the extraction electrode was repaired last Monday and on Tuesday the target table was upgraded. The Faraday cage can be closed and the power supplies can be switch on now. A dummy target with mass markers has been installed to serve for different tests.

- The GPS magnet cycling was changed minimally to comply with the new control infrastructure. The hardware was not changed. The magnet was also checked and it appears to work correctly.

- HRS: the target table was upgraded along with the GPS table on Tuesday. However, there is a serious vacuum leak on the 90º magnet. Since the magnet wasn’t moved for the past 20 years, the exact knowledge how on how to fix it has to be acquired. On Friday the survey team will measure the exact positions to establish a new alignment network, after which the magnet is supposed to be moved. The large leak is probably located on the box connected to the RILIS laser window. In parallel the new controls will be commissioned and tested on the 60º magnet.

- ISCOOL has been tested for vacuum leaks and now it is awaiting the beam.

- The machine supervisor schedule (during working hours) is the following:
20/05 – 26/05: Erwin
27/05 – 02/06: Pascal
03/06 – 09/06 : Didier
10/06 – 16/06: Eleftherios
17/06 – 23/06: Miguel

- The vacuum rack near the VITO line was reinstalled on Wednesday.

- The cable trays and the power cables around LA1, LA2 and VITO will be installed in July. The final budget was accepted by ISOLDE.

- The NICOLE team has started working on the setup. Julien is assisting them.

- In order to install cooling and ventilation on the MISTRAL/NICOLE platform, a cherry picker will be installed for one week in the passage near the IDS setup after May 21.

Bld. 508:

- The cooling and ventilation has been revised and the company should come with a new budget proposal next Wednesday.

- The electricity network has been agreed on, however, the works were put on hold until the cooling and ventilation is defined.

Safety:

- The RP requirements for the summer students are still not known. Maria and Magda are waiting for the feedback from the RP group.

ISOLDE General:

- The king of the Belgians will visit the ISOLDE hall on Wednesday, May 21, from 14.45 – 15.10. A pre-visit took place last Tuesday. People working in the hall at the time of the visit are required to wear visibly their CERN badges. User and workers were asked not to make any noises during that time.

AOB:

- The meeting was followed by seminar of Monika Stachura on “Before MEDICIS” https://indico.cern.ch/event/309121/ . - The next meeting will take place unusually on Wednesday, May 21, at 11.00. There will be no seminar.
