Minutes from the ISOLDE Physics Group Meeting April 30, 2014

No comments to the minutes from the ISOLDE Physics Group Meeting from April 16, 2014.

TECHNICAL NEWS:

- A new 24V power supply has been installed in the ISOLDE control room. It will be available for users and it will serve for the HT interlock chain.

- Two leaks were found on the ISOLDE tape station. One of them has been repaired and the tape station is pumping correctly. The other leak seems to be small and most likely was there already for a long time.

- Problems with the HRS front end were reported. A primary pump has to be exchanged and this requires a fully approved intervention in the target area (ALARA evaluation, etc). Vacuum group is following on that.

- Vacuum issues were also reported on the HRS 90º magnet section. The source of the leak is unknown. It might be connected to the new RILIS laser window which just recently replaced the old one. The vacuum group is following on that too.

- The vacuum rack in the central beam line should be re-installed on Monday, May 5.

- Due to several problems with INCA system the installation of the new HRS magnet controls was impossible. About 2 - 4 weeks are needed for the migration of the new software.

- About 40% of the control applications are working but they still have to be tested with the beam.

- For GLM and GHM users: the deflector position values have been changed: lower values mean that they are further from the central mass while higher values are close to the central mass. The QP arrays should be modified accordingly.

- The new Blaze laser ordered by the RILIS team is supposed to arrive in mid-June 2014. The team is currently working on the Er ionization schemes in the LARIS lab.

- Due to various issues with HRS the technical schedule of the ISOLDE start-up is becoming very tight. Magda will be notified about any possible delays.

- A CERN-wide power cut will take place on May 6, 2014 at 6.30 for 10 min. Users are asked to take care of their equipment.

Bld. 508:

- The electricity plan for the bld. was finalized. The electrical installation will start soon.

- The details of the performance of the proposed cooling and ventilation system are still missing.

- The ground floor of the new bld. should be ready for June 16, 2014. All utilities should be installed and functional by then.

Safety:

- A. Dorsival is absent in week May 5 – 9, 2014. Users are asked to avoid any potentially contaminating works during this week.

- A small electrical accident was reported at one of the setups. To be followed up by Maria, Magda and the local team. We are all reminded that we should perform electrical, cryogenics, crane and other manipulations only if we have the right training (from home institutes or from CERN) and if possible they should be done outside the ISOLDE hall provided the permission to remove the equipment from the hall is given.

ISOLDE General:

- Magda has released the first part of the physics schedule (till the end of October). The next one will be under preparation once ISOLDE takes the protons.

- The ENSAR project (including user support) has been extended till the end of the year 2014. Magda has sent an email to all spokespersons containing the necessary information.

- As of July 1st, 2014 ISOLDE hall will be classified as a simple controlled area. Therefore, users should minimize the time they spend in the hall. If possible, all works that can be carried out (testing electronics etc.) should be moved outside e.g. to the new bld. 508 (ideally ground-floor laboratories which are also within the RP perimeter).

AOB:

- The meeting was followed by the “coffee with nuclei” with Alfredo Poves.

- The next meeting will take place at an unusual time: 10.30 on Wednesday, May 7th in visitor’s room and it will be followed by a seminar of Maria Dorothea Schumann on “Radiochemical separation of exotic radionuclides from accelerator waste for nuclear astrophysics experiments” http://indico.cern.ch/event/309120 /.
