Minutes from the ISOLDE Physics Group Meeting January 23, 2014
Comments to the minutes from the ISOLDE Physics Group Meeting from January 15, 2014:
- “The FC on HRS will be modified to accommodate the new MEDICIS target” Should be: “The front end on HRS […]”.
TECHNICAL NEWS:
- More cable traces will be put on the Saleve side.
- More concrete blocks arrived for the Linac tunnel.
- High-energy transfer lines were re-traced in the extension last week.
- Due to the works in the hall access to the overhead crane will be limited in week 4.
- Several holes in the roof of the extension hall will be soon created for cooling and ventilation.
- Work on the water station behind the ISOLDE control room is on-going. The water should be available again at the beginning of April.
- Old power pockets at ISOLDE are to be exchanged. To be followed up by Magda.
Target area:
- The first robot will be installed at GPS in week 4.
- In week 5 the works connected to the wall of the hot cell will start. This will take about 4 weeks and it should be transparent for ISOLDE.
- Integration tests of the PAD/MAD system are scheduled for week 4.
- Installation for the tests on the LIEBE target started in bld. 3.
MEDICIS:
- The outer walls of the new bld. should be ready on January 24th. The roof of the new bld. will be installed right after. All works should be finished by the end of March 2014.
Bld. 508:
- Works on the concrete floor are on-going.
- Work on the metallic structure will start on January 27th, 2014.
- The lower floor of the new building will be delivered at the beginning of May.
- A meeting on the last details of the cooling, electricity and ventilation will take place on January 23rd.
- For the local teams: the move into the new bld. should be plan well ahead.
Tape station:
- The old tape station, used by the target group for the yield tests, was taken apart. After further investigation it turned out that the problems with the solenoid break experienced last year could have been caused by the vacuum lubricant. Further tests with the radioactive beam are required.
- Any advices on the vacuum compatible lubricant are welcome - to be followed by the T. Giles.
Safety:
- RP confirmed that the status of the ISOLDE experimental hall will be changed from the supervised (doses up to 1 mSv/year) to simple controlled area (doses up to 6 mSv/year and risk of contamination).
- Short-term user’s contracts and dosimeters will no longer be permitted.
- Access to the experimental hall will be granted by passing a tailor made by RP e-course for ISOLDE, followed by a class course which will be organized every week at ISOLDE.
- Access to ISOLDE will require a medical certificate.
- After the change of the area, student’s visits will no longer be allowed.
Schedule:
- The extraction electrode on GPS will be repaired in mid-March.
- The second cleaning of the hall will take place in week 9.
- RFQ cooler will be installed at the beginning of March. The alignment will last till March 21st. Tests with the stable beam will take place in weeks 19 -21.
- The deflector plate controls will be installed at the end of March. To be tested with the stable beam in weeks 19 -21.
- Beam diagnostics, grids and the FCs will be checked by G.J. Focker.
- The re-alignment of the scanners (targets → separators → the experimental hall) will take place most likely at the beginning of April.
- HV will be available at ISOLDE from April 21st. The repairs are scheduled for April 26th – 30th.
- Weeks 17 – 26: stable beam available at ISOLDE. Technical tests (RILIS, targets etc. will have priority, if time allows - off-line physics could be scheduled).
- Week 27 (Jun 30th – Jul 6th): safety chain start-up (power checks, ….)
- Week 28 (July 7th – 13th): first protons available at ISOLDE.
- Week 29 (Jul 14th – 20th): test of the old tape station (T. Giles)
- Week 30 (Jul 21st – 27th) – start of the physics program at ISOLDE
GENERAL ISOLDE:
- 32 documents (25 for ISOLDE, 7 for n-TOF) were received by the INTC committee. Those include mainly status reports and a few addenda.
- The beam time requests will be sent by Magda after the INTC committee meeting (February 12th – 13th).
- Access to the extension hall will require protective equipment (safety shoes and helmets). The discussion on changing the low energy part of the hall into an experimental lab where no helmets are required is on-going.
AOB:
- TRS workshop will be held on February 14th, 2014.
- Deadline for the summer student’s application is January 31st.
- This week Laura Kropf, a potential PhD student at ISOLDE, was visiting ISOLDE.
- The meeting was followed by a seminar Prof. Steven Karataglidis on “Exploring exotic nuclei with the MCAS framework” http://indico.cern.ch/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=293545. - Next PG meeting will take place the next week at the usual time and location. It will be followed by a seminar of Dr. Wolfram Witte on “CIGS thin-film solar cells” http://indico.cern.ch/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=286599.
