Minutes from the ISOLDE Physics Group Meeting December 5, 2013

No comments to the minutes from the ISOLDE Physics Group Meeting from November 28, 2013.

TECHNICAL NEWS:

REX:

- The new attenuation system for REXTRAP RF excitation has been tested. The general performances of the CVORG RF system are however so poor (phase lag of channels, misfiring channels, unequilibrated amplitudes between the channels) that the evaluation can't be finished. These points have to be addressed first. If they can't be solved a commercial system has to be considered.

- The REXEBIS cryostat has been tested after repair: the LHe holding time has improved slightly to ~7 days, compared to 14 days nominal. Such short holding time gives us very limited flexibility in the filling scheme. Fredrik therefore considers several possible options: disassembling and reassembling the system once again, leaving the system as it is or installing the Twin-EBIS. The decision on that will be taken by the end of the next week. The physics in 2015 will not be affected by it.

- As was reported at the workshops a 1.5 A electron beam was propagated with the high current, high compression electron gun at the TestEBIS at BNL. More tests are foreseen for 2014.

RILIS:

- HRS separator window was taken out in order to take measurements. A new system, where the window is further away and thus becomes less contaminated, is being under construction.

- Extension of the RILIS cabin is on-going.

- Off-line lab: Ba scheme development is nearly finished, Ga ionization-cavity tests will be restarted soon.

Target area:

- Different services were taken out from the class A lab.

- The robot support rails have been installed on the ceiling and the robots should be in before Christmas.

- The hot cell room has been extended.

- PAT-MAT (the eye-scan system) to enter the target area installation has been started. The system will be tested 10-16 March 2014.

- New target chambers are being ordered in preparation for next year running period.

MEDICIS:

- Foundations of the new bld. should be ready before Christmas.

GENERAL ISOLDE:

- New cabling in the hall and especially ISOLTRAP area was supposed to happen this week. Due to Erwin’s absence, Magda took over supervision responsibility. For the moment no activity was, however, noticed.

- Works connected to the ventilation system in the ISOLDE extension are currently on-going.

- All primary pumps went of in the hall on Thursday, December 5. Didier will follow it with the vacuum team.

Bld. 508:

- The new concrete floor is under construction.

- As requested, the mechanical workshop’s floor will be separated from the entire lab in order to dump vibrations.

- Users are asked to report to Magda any deviations from the plans of the new bld. 508 that they observe as the works progress, such as: water drains etc.

- The metal frame of the bld. should be delivered in January 2014.

- Safety meeting for the new bld. took place on Monday, December 2.

AOB:

- Notes by Magda from a quick EMC visit are attached to the minutes.

- Magda sent an e-mail to the spokespersons of low-energy experiments, summarizing the documents that should be submitted to the INTC committee in February 2014.

- The meeting was followed by a seminar of Jan Kurcewicz on the Nucleonica software package: www.nucleonica.com.

- The next meeting will take place at the usual time and location and it will be followed by a seminar of Dr. Pierre Capel on “The ration Method: measuring haloes from angular distributions” http://indico.cern.ch/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=283773.

- Next Thursday at 16.30 there will be also a CERN colloquium by the Graphene Nobel laureate. On Friday he will visit ISOLDE.
