Minutes from the ISOLDE Physics Group Meeting October 10, 2013

No comments to the minutes from the ISOLDE Physics Group Meeting from October 3, 2013.

TECHNICAL NEWS:

- Linac tunnel construction is on-going.

- The works connected to the mezzanine should start on Monday, October 14. The metal structure for the floor has arrived and it is stored outside the hall. The new platform will be placed at first, and then the works on the cabling and racks will follow. The works are planned to last until the next year.

- Miguel and Erwin have moved a few cabinets from below the mezzanine to the extension hall for the time of the construction. The beam lines and the NICOLE setup have been covered with a plastic foil. Users having any equipment below the platform are asked to protect it accordingly.

- Several cables are currently stretched in the hall in the passage between the control room and the MISTRAL corner. Some of the cables will be used for the “beam alarm” system, which will soon be installed in the target, separator and HV areas (the alarm will be triggered in the situation when someone is still in one of the three areas when protons are supposed to arrive at ISOLDE). The other cables will be used for the slits located in the separator area.

- The cooling water will be available in the hall again from March 15, 2014.

RILIS:

- Still no news about the cabin extension.

- The team is still working on the HRS laser launch system.

REX:

- EBIS vacuum parts were taken away.

- The second FC from the REX-TRAP is being repaired.

GENERAL ISOLDE:

- Protons should be delivered as planned in June/July 2014.

- The beam alignment will not happen during this shutdown. The main reason was the amount of other works taking place at the moment at ISOLDE. A more suitable moment will be chosen.

- Users planning new installation in the hall are asked to keep in mind the future beam realignment. The beam line supports adjustable in height are strongly encouraged.

- The technical group will open one switchyard in order to check the position of the bender and the kickers as compared with the outside of the vacuum chamber.

- The discussion on the realignment of the scanner and the FCs during LS1 is on-going.

Bld. 508:

- Ar and N bottles have been already moved away from the wall of the hall.

- Due to many problems with the cabin-solution for b508 (SSP and laser laboratories required many non-standard elements) the decision was taken to abandon the cabin construction and have instead a “normal” building with a metal structure skeleton. The price difference will be provided by GS Consolidation funding and the building should be delivered by the end of February 2014.

- New drawings of the bld. 508 are being prepared.

- The concrete floor will be still prepared in October 2013.

Clean-up of the hall:

- The cleaning of the hall was finished on Wednesday October 9.

- There are still a few days left in the cleaning contract thus, the team will be called again in a few weeks from now to clean the new dust generated from the still on-going works in the hall.

AOB:

- The PhD application deadline at CERN is on November 19, 2013. ISOLDE might get a student from one of two special programs: a Greek students affiliated with the Greek universities and the Genthner Program for students coming from EU-CERN member countries and affiliated with a German university.

- CERN will host several US students (Boston University, Notre Dame, etc) for internship and ISOLDE has a chance to get one or two of them. Magda will send around an email containing information about their background, possible projects and the general agenda of their stay at CERN. Local ISOLDE members interested in hosting such student should send Magda a title and a short description of the suggested project before Tuesday October 15.

- ISOLDE has been open back for the visits.

- Three active dosimeters foreseen for the group visits are stored in Maria’s office. Guides are asked to use them instead of their own active dosimeters. The so called IMPACT code for the visit is written next t the dosimeters.

- The ISOLDE Shell Model Course will be held at CERN on October 14 – 18. The program is available on https://indico.cern.ch/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=248704. The morning lectures are open for everybody and the afternoon computing sessions are open only for the registered participants.

- The meeting was followed by a seminar of Vladimir Manea.

- Next PG meeting will take place on October 31, 2013.
