4 April 2013

No Comments to the minutes of the ISOLDE Physics Group Meeting of the 21.03.2013:

TECHNICAL NEWS:

  • Works in the hall:
    • tentative date for cutting the wall: ~ 15th April;
    • still some cables and trays to be removed;
    • the tunnel of the Linac will be without electricity;
  • Beam lines: The vacuum in the target and the separator region plus REXTrap and other devices will be restarted. Only pumps using water for cooling cannot be restarted (no cooling water available);
  • RILIS: the tests on the thermal lens on HRS showed that the problem is due to dust deposited on the prism before the HRS lens. This rules out any problem on the window. The target test-unit equipped with the potentiometer is still under preparation;
  • Chemical storage:  the chemical laboratory (3-1-039) will be operational till September, it will be moved once the works in the laboratory downstairs are finished;

SAFETY

  • The first shielding wall, 5 cm thick, for the front-end was received;
  • Last two targets were removed;
  • Since the beginning of April, a new procedure applies for the active dosimeters. Alexander Dorsival will give a presentation on Tuesday 16.04.2013 at the end of the Technical Meeting. The physics group is invited.
  • The active dosimeter for visitors (one per guide) has to be requested to the access-card service office (bldg. 55). Normally they should be given back at the end of the visit. To avoid the procedure, we are considering having a pool of three active dosimeters permanently at ISOLDE for visitors. In any case, before entering the hall, they must be activated with a code and stop activation when leaving. Please refer to the presentation by Alexander for more information.

AOB

  • Visits:
    • Next Wednesday 10.04.2013 from 14:00 to 16:00, the Scientific Policy Committee will visit ISOLDE. An introductory presentation will be given by Maria in the Isolde Meeting room. Each experiment in the hall should provide a guide to show the setup.
  • Next week, Abel Fenta will speak about “Hyperfine Techniques studies of surfaces and interfaces using isolated ad-atom probes”
    •
  • The meeting was followed by the seminar “Alpha decay, beta-delayed fission and laser spectroscopy at CERN ISOLDE - The impact of the GSI target laboratory on the ISOLDE physics program” by Thomas Elias Cocolios
