24 January 2013

No Comments to the minutes of the ISOLDE Physics Group Meeting of the 17.01.2013;

The meeting took place exceptionally on Wednesday, from next week meeting always on Thursday;

TECHNICAL NEWS:

- GPS

o Target change completed. The Ti target has been taken off by hand and will be most probably sent back to PSI. The Front End is now closed off with a “plug” target.

o Richard inspected the movement of the extraction electrode. It is broken from the outside (good news for the repair procedure), but in any case it would not have been possible to repair it during the running due to high activity;

- HRS

o Target change completed. The last HRS UC2-C target has been put on the shelf and a target for stable beams was put on the Front End..

- It was the last time that the present target robots have were used.

- REX

o Running with stable beams from EBIS for test of the HIE-ISOLDE beam diagnostic devices

o Next week, test of the automatic beam tuning by Tim

- RILIS

o Checks with high-power laser beams to see why the beam from the commercial laser was defocused during December tests. ;

o Checks on the RILIS vacuum window on GPS and HRS

- ISCOOL

o It will be dismantled and checked/repaired in B279. It will be back in the hall in 2014.

GENERAL ISOLDE HALL:

  • Survey of the beam line still going on. A 10mm vertical displacement of beamlines (left and right from CB0) was measured, compared to more than the 5mm measured at the end of the 90’s. The building, however, does not show any visible cracks. Still more information is needed before any decision is taken.
  • ISOLDE start-up next year is planned for April 2. This is based on the first proton beam expected by June 16, 2014.
  • Richard started to work on the programme during the shutdown: hot period in the target area: December-January.
  • On 16th March all targets will be taken from ISOLDE to the ISR storage place.

SAFETY

  • From 1st March 2013, visitors to ISOLDE need helmets. The helmets (enough for 2 groups of 12 people) are stored in the new meeting room opposite from the kitchen (always lock it; with SC40 key).
  • DAQ room can be used to store helmets and safety shoes of ISOLDE users. Its door will be repaired and then the room will be locked with SC40 key.
  • Visiting scientists must have their own helmet and safety shoes for entering the hall (please do not use the visitor helmets);
  • Two possible models of helmets are available on the CERN store. The cheaper of the two is fine for any work in ISOLDE. SCEM numbers: 50.43.30.050.4, 50.43.30.060.2, and 50.43.30.070.0. https://edh.cern.ch/edhcat/Browser?command=showPage&argument=18131&top=18131&objid=%24%24EDH6d5gk6o43&showAdvanced=&scem=&keywords=

AOB:

  • Summer Students: Project already submitted:

o 1Permanent Decay Station-DAQ (Jan)

o 2Permanent Decay Station-Detectors (Elisa)

o 3beta-NMR (Monika)

o 4 ASPIC (Monika)

o 5Solid State Physics (Guillerme)

o 6CRIS (Kieran)

and, in the pipeline:

o 7Witch (Martin)

o 8Collaps

o 9SSP (Karl)

o 10RILIS (Sebastian)

  • CERN is looking for more candidates for the summer Student Program. It is very disappointing that only 300 applications have been received so far compared to 800 from last year. Please spread around information about the Programme: Deadline of Summer Students: (i) to submit applications: 31 January 2013 (ii) to submit all required documents: 3 February 2013 (00:00 CET).
  • Conferences:

o INPC (Florence, Italy): 4 abstracts from ISOLDE have been submitted;

o ANIMMA2013, 23-27 June 2013, Nuclear Instrumentation and Measurement methods, Abstract Deadline prolonged to February 6th

o Workshop on Shape Coexistence organized by Andrei Andreyev in York, 15-16 April;

  • Visits in Isolde:

o 29th January, students from University of Surrey (Prof. Phil Walker): 1st guide is Kara. One more guide is needed: call for volunteers still open. The tour will take place either before 2 p.m. or after 5 p.m.;

  • New CERN user registration: please find in attachment the file on CERN registration. And ISOLDE access rules from 1st March. Please give your feedback to Magda and/or Jenny about the result of your user registration.
  • Three articles on ISOLDE in the CERN Bulletin this week: http://cds.cern.ch/journal/CERNBulletin/2013/05/News%20Articles/?ln=en
  • The meeting was followed by the seminar of Carlos Guerrero Sanchez, "Physics with neutron beams at the CERN n_TOF facility".
  •
  • Seminar next week: Andreas Knecht “Weak Interaction Studies with 6He”
