Main Technical News:
- On HRS, target UCx-Ta #480 still installed. ISCOOL tests are ongoing, the most likely reason for instabilities in the transmitted beam intensity is the injection quadrupole, which might have a loose contact. The investigations continue until Friday and a possible intervention will take place next week.
- HRS watchdog working again. An HV sent through the faulty connector cured it and the workaround solution was not necessary. As a follow-up of Be-11 problems protons impinged on target to check surface-ionized yield of Li-8 and Na-26. The yields are as expected, while the yield of Be-10 will be tested on FC with lasers on Monday.
- The HRS separator window for RILIS lasers was inspected visually and is not coated ion beam. Thus it is not the reason for poor Be-11 yields.
- On GPS, Target Ta-W #482 still installed for physics at REX (2nd beam line) and GHM at 30kV. Experiment IS 520 uses Be-12 while IS 453 on GHM uses Be-11 in the breaks. The beam was ready one day ahead of schedule, but the REX user had vacuum problems, and Be-12 was taken only on Saturday.
- YGPS.FC490 has movement problems and can get stuck in the “in” position. Do not use it until further notice! A possible mechanical intervention can happen earliest on 6.8., after IS 520 and other experiments have finished.
REX/RILIS:
- The difficulties with light beams at the low-energy part of REX have been resolved. The beam was gained back mainly by retuning the trap.
- Follow-up from last week’s EBIS bad vacuum: the amount of 12C contamination is normal (ca. 10epA).
- The expected C contamination was reduced factor 100 by use of stripping foils in REX. Further reduction of C signal was achieved inside MAYA, by using an aluminum mask.
- The slow-extraction of Be-12 was prepared on Monday. It let getting rid of the strong background from delta electrons.
- For 9Be4+ REX efficiency through the LINAC is about 90%, and in the low-energy part it is slightly above 9%.
- The GPS yields of Be beams with RILIS are comparable to those in 2010 and 2011 (and are 10x above database entries for Be-11 and Be-12).
- The fast beam gate has been successfully tested on the HRS beam line at a repetition rate of 10kHz and a duty cycle of 0.05 (open for 5µs, closed for 95µs). It is available as a backup for the normal beam gate.
- RILIS will switch to Dy beams on Monday, to be ready for collections on Tuesday night.
Physics/Schedule:
- The MAYA experiment, using an active target filled with isobutene gas, is running on post-accelerated Be-12 beams from GPS and collecting statistics. The spokesperson thanked the involved technical teams for assistance (operators, vacuum, safety). The physics case is to study the ground state of Be-13 through the population of its isobaric analog resonance in B-13, via (Be-12,p)-reaction.
- GPS target is also used for online emission channeling of Be-11 at GHM.
- In a meeting with the management, the prolongation of LHC beam time until mid-February was confirmed, discussions about prolongation of the non-LHC physics program are still ongoing.
Safety:
- On Monday, there has been a level 1 radiation alarm in the target-extraction area. Proton beam current was lowered. The monitor might need checking (or the release was indeed high).
- There was a safety visit in the ISOLDE hall and bldg. 115. The report will soon be available on EDMS.
AOB:
- Yorick’s farewell party will take place this Thursday at 16H30 in the glass box. All members of ISOLDE are invited.
- The discussions of refurbishing bldg. 115 are still ongoing, a quote is now available.
- There will be a TSR@ISOLDE workshop from 29. – 30.10. Susanne isin charge of the organization. An announcement will soon be distributed.
- The contract of Magda as physics coordinator has been prolonged until September 2014.
- The contribution of the PH department for the European Strategy in Particle Physics (ESPP) is still under preparation.
- Please do not forget to acknowledge ENSAR funding in respective publications with the following sentence:” This work was supported by the European Union Seventh Framework through ENSAR (contract no. 262010).” More details can be found at: http://isolde.web.cern.ch/ISOLDE/default2.php?index=index/facilityindex.htm&main=facility/financial.php
