Main Technical News:

  • The GPS target-heating controls exhibit problems, waiting for CERN controls to deal with it.
  • There has been a power cut on 1.5. at 6am, which affected the ISOLDE buildings differently. In bldg. 170, target heating, high voltage (also at ISOLTRAP) went off but no major interruption noticeable. In bldg. 275, however, the pumps went off.
  • The target #473 survived the power cut, however, the heating went off again when shooting with protons on target because of a steep pressure increase which in turn triggered the interlocks. This happened twice. According to Thierry, the target is nevertheless fine and useable for the upcoming REX run. All of Monday, 7.5., there are yield measurements scheduled for Cd and At..
  • The next target on GPS will be a UCx-Ta target #474 to be put on tomorrow.

REX/RILIS:

  • REX is well in time with preparation and is injecting stable Cs beam into REXEBIS.
  • RILIS has been gaining a factor of 2 for Cd beam by increasing the power in one of the ionization steps with a second laser. They will switch to At on Monday and perform test on the quartz line of the currently mounted HRS target #473.

Other Information from Technical Meeting:

  • In the LA0 section, a turbo pump makes noise; the vacuum group will be informed to check it.

Physics/Schedule:

  • HRS: COLLAPS has been running on a UCx-W-q-n target #473 on neutron-rich Cd isotopes with yields slightly lower than expected. Protons were exclusively focused on the neutron converter, decreasing the contamination of In and Cs considerably. It could, however, be observed that the quartz line has become coated over time, leading to an increase in contamination.
  • The next users will be REX/MINIBALL IS 524.
  • At GLM, the diffusion chamber has been successfully installed and tested with radioactive beam.
  • The next users on GPS will be IS 534 on neutron-deficient At isotopes.
  • A final version of the schedule for the second trimester will be published this week.
  • The deadline for ENSAR applications is expected for mid-May.

Safety:

  • According to Olivier Tisson, the electrical safety inspection for any experiment in ISOLDE (especially CRIS and ISOLTRAP are waiting since a few weeks), was transferred to the responsibility of an external company. However, possible inspection dates have not been communicated to the experiment responsible. Magda will check whether the visits (and reports) are to be expected during the running period.
  • Please check whether your gas bottles in the new (unsecured) “point gaz” are all there. If you experience any oddities, please contact Magda.
  • Bldg. 275 has a leaking roof. Guilherme is taking care of it. Also, the building has been filling up with devices etc. for storage. Please avoid using this building for new storage.

AOB:

  • Two summer students from Caen have arrived, Amelie Grabowski and Tangi Nicol. They will work with Jan and Susanne, respectively.
  • Projects for non-member state students still haven’t been informed. Magda will try to acquire the status on this.
  • The wireless connection in the visitors’ room is bad. Magda will look into it.

Presentation:

  • There was no presentation today.
  • Next week, there will be a lecture series on super heavy elements, held jointly by F. Hessberger, P. Möller, and Yurichiro Nagame: http://indico.cern.ch/categoryDisplay.py?categId=115
  • Rick Casten will be at CERN from end of Mai until mid of June. Thomas will see into it whether a lecture program can be arranged.
