11 February 2012

1. Technical news:

· The GPS robot made a faulty operation while preparing the removal of the targets, which are to be transported to the ISR storage area on Saturday. The targets were removed manually. The problem will be addressed during the annual maintenance in March.

· The vacuum server has been updated.

· Several scanners and faraday cups have been exchanged on both GPS and HRS:

HRS.SC482/3 - replaced

HRS.SC680/FC690 - replaced

GPS.SC556/FC558 - replaced

CA0.SC20/FC30 - taken out for repair

· Wiregrids: Maintenance and updates on the electronics.

· The following “user Faraday cups” readable in the ISOLDE control system are available in 2012: LA1 (replaced), LA3 (COLLAPS), CD0 (ISOLTRAP).

· Pre-pump maintenance at HRS is taking place this week. The ALARA procedure is in place.

· The Strasbourg group will attempt to repair the fast tape station in week 13.

· The cold weather caused a frozen tap resulting in a water leak in b. 179. However, there has been no material on the floor and no radiation risk has been identified by the RP.

· One of RILIS pump lasers is expected to return from repair shortly.

2.Physics and schedule:

· Last year 490 shifts were scheduled of which 460 were delivered. Out of 1060 approved shifts, 930 are requested this year. Not more than 550 shifts can be scheduled.

3.A.O.B.

· The user mechanical workshop behind ISOLDE will stay in place until October. After the online period it will be dismounted to make space for the enlarged SSP lab in b. 115. Setting up the workshop elsewhere would certainly be useful. However, this is not clear at the moment. There are two problems: first, the existing machines do not comply with today’s standards, and second, there are no obvious options for the new location. If b. 507 is to be rebuilt, then it is possible that a new workshop will be set up there.

· The following list of priorities was established concerning the summer-student program.

Highest priority without order:

- MINIBALL (Elisa)

- ISOLDE digital acquisition (Jan)

- Bio-NMR (Monika)

- SSP (Guilherme)

Second highest by order of preference:

5. CRIS (Kara)

6. ISOLTRAP (Susanne)

7. WITCH (Martin)

8. COLLAPS (Deyan)

9. SSP (Jens)

10. SSP (Karl)

11. Windmill (Thomas)

12. SSP (Second subject of Guilherme)

Matthew Fraser (BE/HIE-ISOLDE) will submit a subject for the special Finnish contingent.

· Consider the “Nuclear structure and dynamics II” conference.

· There will be no group meeting this week due to the absence of many.

4. Seminars:

· Philip Walker, University of Surrey, presented the last of his series of lectures “The excitation and decay of nuclear isomers”.

· Following the meeting on Feb 22 there will be a presentation by Erwin Siesling on the work schedule during the Long Shutdown.

· For more information please visit the ISOLDE - seminars page.
