- Summer students office space:
- 7 summer students are confirmed for ISOLDE.
- There is enough space to accommodate all of them in the current offices.
- MK will look into available computers.
- News from the technical group:
- FE7 commissioned. FE6 fully maintained. HV test revealed some sparking – SOLVED. HV tests still ongoing. Holding 60keV. Issues with valves not fully closing; not a problem for operation but not ideal for radioprotection safety – new set of valves probably responsible and solution under investigation.
- GPS rf connections tested successfully on FE7. 50% RF loss – can be compensated for in the LIST target but might be a problem in the September ECR source test; losses at present rf connectors are being investigated.
- ISOLDE security chain on. In order to access separator area, the key must be taken from the CCC (Prevessin).
- Separator magnets cycling correctly. Beam already transported through GPS.
- Vacuum successfully restored everywhere in ISOLDE. Some minor issues with turbo pump controllers at GPS.
- ISCOOL vacuum 0K; transparent window for optical pumping in place. No realignment foreseen this shutdown (no time). ISOLDE(-Pascal)-made amplifier is back in place; a commercial unit will be placed next year, to be maintained by the CERN RF group.
- RILIS “saw the light […]” Laser beam path to GPS verified successfully. Beam path to HRS currently under verification. Test of laser ionization of (stable) Sm starting tomorrow.
- REXTRAP trapping 0K. Connection to WITCH 0K.
- EBIS is starting up. Twin-EBIS is also available off-line at CERN. In emergency, it might help in fixing the on-line device.
- All FC have the auto-range implemented. The displays have been updated. There are additional FC connectors to ISOLDE controls at the end of the user’s beam lines to allow travelling experiments to provide their own tuning elements. Scanners are working. Last FC before ISOLTRAP has been fixed: there was a screw that was too long which caused undesired connection to ground.
- 3 flat screens are in the ISOLDE Control Room for the PSB Vistar, the GPS Vistar, and the HRS Vistar.
- Safety:
- There have recently been difficulties in renting radioactive sources from the RP Department, experienced by WITCH. Should anyone else in ISOLDE have experienced such difficulties, please inform MK.
- Concerning the traveling setups and their needs for vacuum pumps, ISOLDE aims at preventing the travel of oil pumps, where the oil might have been activated and presents a safety hazard. 2(+1 soon) roughing pumps are available at ISOLDE. The availability of turbo pumps is not guaranteed. MK will inform the spokespersons and local contacts of active experiments with details.
- No update on fixed-experiment safety files yet. It is in the hands of the safety group.
- Visits:
- Chains and poles are available to limit the access of some areas during visits. Make use of them.
- Visit today by German students (TUMunchen) was successful.
- Visit next week Friday afternoon by UK students (Liverpool). MB, KL, and TP will take care of the group. MB will give the introduction.
- PVD shall have a new and updated presentation for such event by then.
- A.O.B:
- Later this week: stable beam through GPS and Sm laser ionization tests.
- Next week: first protons on target at ISOLDE and PSB tests.
- In 2 weeks: first physics at ISOLDE (Ga @ COLLAPS).
- Seminars
- This week: “Physics case for a low-energy storage ring at ISOLDE” by Yuri Litvinov (GSI).
- Next week: “Physics of Baseball” by Rick Casten (Yale University)
