24 March 2010

1. Technical news:

· The tests of the new vacuum control system take longer than foreseen. This will cause a delay the tests of the new frontend FE6.

· The deconsignation of ISOLDE power supplies will take place April 12, a week later than expected. The first physics run will follow two weeks later starting on April 29.

· The preparations on REX-ISOLDE are progressing according to schedule. The first physics run will take place at the end of May.

· The schedule of ISOLDE experiments for 2010 will be published on our webpage soon.

· A delivery of high-density UC from Russia is expected soon. Currently, the discussion on safety issues related to transport is being finalized.

2. News on the progress of HIE-ISOLDE from Yacine Kadi:

· The budget of the project was accepted at 34.5 million CHF. In addition CERN will provide funding for about 40 positions over a period of 5 years during the implementation.

· The design of the future installations has been approved.

· The CERN management has also agreed on the recuperation of the nearby building, which is currently used as a covered parking for lorries and other machinery. A number of ideas for its future use are being considered.

· Discussions on safety issues related to transport of irradiated samples as well as cryogenics and the high beam energy are ongoing.

· A prototype cavity of the future accelerator is being tested. If the test is successful production of the other cavities and components can begin.

· The period 2014-2015 is targeted for the installation and commissioning of LINAC4, which will take over from LINAC2 installed in the distant 1978. Online work at ISOLDE during this period will not be possible.

3. A.O.B.

· Several schools on nuclear physics will occur this year. Students from the ISOLDE community attending the first two in the following list will get financial support, which will cover accommodation and fees.

17-th Euroschool on Exotic Beams 4- 10 September, Santiago de Compostela (Spain)

Ecole Internationale Joliot Curie 27 September - 3 October, Lacanau (France)

International School of Physics Enrico Fermi, 29 June - 24 July, Varenna (Itally)

7-th International Balkan School on Nuclear Physics, 15 - 22 September, (Turkey)

· Prof. Elias Khan presented “Are there nuclear structure experiments relevant for neutron stars physics”.
