17 February 2010

  • A new student from Slovakia joined the RILIS team.
  • RILIS will be supported in the next five years by Bruce Marsh, who was granted a position at ISOLDE as a laser physicist.
  • Sunday, Feb 21 is the deadline for submitting abstracts to the EURORIB 2010 conference!
  • Neither Alex nor Yorickattended the technical meeting yesterday, so no shutdown news was given.
  • The laser ion source of ISOLTRAP is operational. Currently it is being used for mass measurements of stable palladium and cadmium isotopes. This is essential for foreseen double beta-decay experiments, which require high-precision of the masses involved.
  • The physics group of ISOLDE generated 10 summer-student projects. In a common discussion under the supervision of the section leader Yorick Blumenfeldpriorities have been assigned in conjunction with the new selection procedures. The projects were distributed in three groups. Those in group 1, will run with a high priority and have an increased chance of obtaining the highest-ranking candidate from the list specified by each supervisor. Group 2 will most likely obtain students with lower ranking. The projects from group 3 are those outside the ISOLDE quota of 7. For some of those it may be possible to get a student from a non member state. The group ranking is as follows:

Group 1: Cederkall, Flanagan, Guilherme ( Subject 1: Setting up a Medipixdetector) , Pakarinnen

Group 2: Johnston, Kowalska, Severijns

Group 3: Guilherme(Subject 2: Upgrade of the e-gamma ...), Herlert, Yordanov

Within each group the list is alphabetical.

  • Next week, 24/02 talk by Kieran T. Flanagan on the CRIS experiment.
