  1. Technical News and Experiments
  • GPS IS476 : 31,33Ar decay experiment. Ar yields dropped over time, but due to the fact that these beams are produced with a light primary target, the proton beam current could be increased to 2.3 microAmps, after approval by RP. The target heating dropped off, without influencing the Ar yields, whereas the N and O (molecular) contaminants decreased. Message here is that for such short lived isotopes, turning off the target heating helps to suppress contamination !
  • GPS is being setup for Mg beam for COLLAPS. 50 kV sparks and electrode had to be retracted.
  • Question on performance of VADIS ion source : is there a factor 10 increase in yield yes or no ? Difficult to answer, because the total efficiency is a product of ion source efficiency and target production. Factors 2-5 fluctuation in production are common from one target to the other. Lower ion source efficiency is caused by a change of material in the VADIS, by which the plasma saturates and the efficiency drops. Investigations on the latter is a work in progress.
  • HRS : 138Xe g-factor measurement at REX. Smooth run from point of view of (REX-) ISOLDE. The experimental setup, using part of MINIBALL suffered from scattered RIB in the chamber, causing a buildup of activity. The beam intensity had to be reduced because of this.
  • No vacuum leak was found in the merging switchyard.
  • GLM & GHM : ECR has been removed from GHM and emission channeling chamber has been installed on GHM. Some parts on GHM are still in manual mode, but this will be changed in the future.
  1. A.O.B.
  • Building 507 (“Lightbuilding”) is chaotic. Clean up and re-organization will be necessary.
  • There is a mouse spotted in ISOLDE. It’s darkgrey, fast and potentially dangers for equipment. No measures taken so far.
  1. Seminar
  • Two summer student talks : Per-Ivar (WITCH) and Hirshi (ISOLTRAP)
