Minutes from the ISOLDE Physics Group Meeting September 10, 2014

No comments to the minutes from the ISOLDE Physics Group Meeting on September 4, 2014.

TECHNICAL NEWS:

GPS:
- UC2 target with the neutron converter was unable to produce enough Mn for SSP and IDS. High contamination of stable Rb from a dispenser which appeared once the protons were moved to the target prevented extraction of any radioactive beam. On Sunday it was decided to replace the target with another unit.
- A used UC2 with quartz line was put on Monday. This target is currently being used by the SSP users at GLM and GHM, however, no experiments can be performed at IDS. IDS will take the beam tonight for some production tests at the setup.
- Due to the constant tripping of the HV the proton intensity at the target had to be lowered to 0.5 μA. It turned out, however, that this was caused by the HV modulator which broken completely on Wednesday. The modulator has already been exchanged by J. Schipper and the proton intensity at the target could be increased again to 2 μA.
- The deflector plates in the GPS switchyard got stuck again when the GLM and GHM plates were very close to each other. A specialist had to be called in order to resolve the situation.
- FC490 is becoming noisy at the level of 20-30 picoA. G-J. Focker will probably take a look at it next Monday.

HRS:
- New target UC2 with surface and RILIS ionization for Windmill and ISOLTRAP experiments was put in place on Friday.
- The problem with cycling the magnet was reproduced in the presence of a specialist, however, the origin of it has not been identified yet. It is suspected that this might be connected to the noise or communication. A work-around solution was prepared by M. Benito while the investigation is on-going.
- 80% of transmission was reported through the RFQ Cooler.

- Faraday cup read outs freeze quite often, with the refresh rate of 8 sec. After rebooting the diagnostics programme or the whole console the refresh rate is faster but it gradually gets slower in time again. To be followed up.
- The technical network test created many troubles at ISOLDE last Monday, causing i.e. disappearance of the e-logbooks and blockage of the QP arrays. The situation was re-established within an hour.

Physics and schedule:
- Proton scan on HRS is supposed to be done today. The yield checks will be done on Friday. After that Windmill and ISOLTRAP will take the At beam.
- IDS could not perform any physics program. Beam was taken to carry out several tests at the setup.
- Mössbauer (on GLM) and emission channeling (on GHM) groups are currently running. The beamtime was reported to be the most difficult ever, but results are coming.
- Magda is working on the last part of the physics schedule. It should be ready by the end of the week.

Safety:
- Miguel is in charge of the re-arranging the electrical workshop in bld. 275. This place will be used until the proper lab is ready in bld. 508.
- It has been reported that the safety equipment for working with cryogenics (glasses, gloves, transfer lines etc.) is not sufficient in the hall. Magda will follow up.
- A change in policy of using radioactive sources will be introduced at ISOLDE within next 2-3 weeks. Based on the recommendation from RP access to the alpha sources will be limited only to several local users.
- J. Germa (DGS-RP-RW) and A. Dorsival (RP) requested that all the sources used or stored within the ISOLDE perimeter have to be registered in the RP central database. To be followed up by Monika.
- Users are reminded that the entrance to the ISOLDE hall is from the Jura side. The entrance from SAS is not possible anymore.

Bld. 508:
- The new delivery date was set for the end of October
- Magda will call for a meeting with the users in order to discuss and organize the move.

ISOLDE General:
- The toolbox for users is again available at ISOLDE. The key for it is stored in the key cabinet in the ICR.
- The key cabinet needs a clean-up. Also, some additional key pins were requested.

AOB:
- CERN Research Board approved the recommendations of the INTC committee from the last meeting.
- The next deadline for submitting the documents to the INTC committee is on October 8, 2014.
- Next PG meeting will take place at the usual time and place.

There will be no seminar. Minutes taken by MS
