Minutes from the ISOLDE Physics Group Meeting July 31, 2014

TECHNICAL NEWS

- GPS:
• First proton scan done (on the SEM-grid) on Friday, July 25 and during the weekend.
• First Ta target for physics experiments was installed on Tuesday, July 29. This target will serve for the production of medical isotopes (IS528) collected at GLM and GHM, and the IDS stable and radioactive beam tests.
• The FC20 intervention took place on Tuesday, July 29. The broken actuator was exchanged, then a trouble-making signal cable was replaced and the current was immediately seen on it.

- HRS:
• Proton scan was performed with the use of SEM grid target on Monday, July 28.
• On Tuesday, July 29, a new UCX target with neutron converter was installed for HV tests and CRIS physics (IS471).
• HV tests connected to the placement of the new MEDICIS target are carried out on Wednesday and Thursday, July 30 and 31. In case when the MEDICIS target interrupts the performance of the HRS front end it will be taken away.
• HV tests about air ionization when protons are hitting the target are planned for July 31 and August 1(performed by T. Giles).
• Some problems were reported on the RF cooler. To be followed up by T. Giles and C. Babcock.
• If RF cooler performs well, CRIS will take over the beam for experiments with Fr isotopes.

ISOLDE GENERAL:

Safety:
- As of this week access to the ISOLDE hall is with the personal dosimeters. Access with the CERN cards is no longer possible.
- Hands-on ISOLDE RP course has had the first sessions - users who took it are encouraged to give feedback.
- All ISOLDE physicists employed by CERN are supposed to follow the one day long RP course. Users are requested to follow the 2-h course mentioned above.

Physics and schedule:
- Magda will soon release the latest (July 25) version of the physics schedule.

Status of the experiments:
- IDS: new DAQ has arrived. Multiple tests on-going. The wire scanner on RC4 is currently not operational – to be followed up by the team.
- GLM and GHM: ready for the experiments.

AOB:
- Julien Thiboud is finishing his contract at ISOLDE at the end of August. some of his current tasks have been redistributed to:
• LN2 for travelling setups – Magda Kowalska
• Radioactive sources – Monika Stachura
• ISOLDE pumping stations and leak tester – Stephan Ettenauer
- The ISOLDE toolbox has been updated and it is again available for users (key will be put in the key cabinet).
- There will be three visits of summer students at ISOLDE. Magda is searching for the guides.
- The meeting was followed by the seminar of Dr. Alexander Gottberg on “Introduction into Technical Aspects of ISOL targets” https://indico.cern.ch/event/332444/. The second part of the presentation, to be given by Dr. Tania Mendoca, will take place on Friday, August 1 at 14.30.
- Next week there will be two seminars by Prof. Richard Casten:
• Tuesday Aug 5: “Symmetries Galore: Implications of the newly recognized proliferation of symmetry remnants in nuclei (1/2)” https://indico.cern.ch/event/334050/.
• Thursday Aug 7: “Testing Theories (7/7) https://indico.cern.ch/event/334051/. - The next meeting will take place unusually on Wednesday, August 6 at 14.00 , and it will be followed by three seminars of summer students: Marcel Diem, Hayley Osman and Johnny Grimaldo.
