Minutes from the ISOLDE Physics Group Meeting June 19, 2014
No comments to the minutes from the ISOLDE Physics Group Meeting on June 12, 2014.
TECHNICAL NEWS:
- GPS: generally in a good state. The separator is running. RILIS laser tests on Ba beam are on-going. More RILIS tests still to be done with this and the next target. The GPS.FC490 has a very long response time – this problem seems to be related to electronics and not controls.
- HRS: finally made leak-tight last week. Currently the laser powermeter target, which cannot produce any beam, is being used for different RILIS tests. This target will be exchanged to a new one with the FEBIAD ion source on Thursday, June 19. The latter target will be used, among the others, for setting up the HRS separator and checking the magnet controls. A few vacuum problems remain to be solved on HRS. Mechanical faults on the HRS.FC369 and HRS.FC748 have been found. To be dealt with on Monday, June 23.
- All controls are in a reasonable state now.
- Major things left to test are: HRS, RFQ, RFQ bunching and the ISOLDE tape station.
- The ISOLDE tape station was giving bad readings at the end of 2012. The mechanical work on the station has been done and only time syncronisation with radioactive beam is left to be checked. This work was originally planned to be done with HRS, however, now the tests will be performed with GPS. Several days were requested for that matter.
- Calibration of the deflector plates for GLM and GHM is supposed to be done with stable beam in the last week of June.
- Water pipes in the target area have been re-welded. The welding of one pipe reminds to be checked.
- Before any protons can be taken at ISOLDE the target area has to be completely finished.
- Software problem related to the scanners (wrong offset) were reported by the operators. It’s not clear where they are coming from. Consultations with several experts have to be launched before the problem can be completely solved.
Bld. 508:
- The asphalt around the bld. is expected to be ready before July 1.
- Electricity, cooling and ventilation are currently on hold, awaiting for approvals from the CERN site.
Safety:
- No news from RP regarding the visits in the hall after July 1.
- New dosimeter application form was released last week. Everyone requesting a dosimeter after July 1st will have to present the form. Temporary dosimeters are no longer allowed at ISOLDE.
- The first hands-on RP course for ISOLDE users will be held on July 22. The following courses will take place on Tuesdays and Fridays at 2pm. There will be no course on August 1.
- The next laser safety course will be held on July 18, at 2 – 6 pm. There are still several places available. CERN requires that all working with lasers follow this course.
ISOLDE General:
- The remaining part of the trench was cleaned Tuesday, June 10.
- Posters for every permanent device and installation in the experimental hall should be prepared by the responsible groups and placed in the hall before the end of June. Official ISOLDE poster template should be used.
- Progress report from the experiments:
• GLM and GHM: deflector plates still to be recalibrated, otherwise, ready to take the beam.
• VITO: still waiting for the missing elements. Cabling in place. Controls are being implemented in the ISOLDE control system.
• ISOLTRAP: tests with HV and the off-line ion source are being performed, ion beam in the horizontal part of the beam line. Testing the bunching.
• COLLAPS: waiting for the beam line elements required for the experiments with Ca. Currently working on DAQ.
• CRIS: working on the implementation of the power laser in the hall.
• IDS: beam line completed and aligned. DAQ still missing. Tests of the detectors. Electrical installation ready. Tests with the stable beam this week.
• NICOLE: leak test done at room temperature. Cables cleaned for the HIE-ISOLDE work. In July or August a leak test will be repeated at low temperatures.
AOB:
- The meeting was followed by the seminar of Dr. Achim Schwenk on “Three-nucleon forces: From neutron-rich nuclei to matter in astrophysics” https://indico.cern.ch/event/324585/.
- The next meeting will take place at the usual time and it will be followed by three short presentations by the Boston students and “Coffee with nuclei” with Alfredo Poves.
