Minutes from the ISOLDE Physics Group Meeting May 21, 2014

No comments to the minutes from the ISOLDE Physics Group Meeting on May 15, 2014.

TECHNICAL NEWS:

- The GPS front-end and separator are in good state. The entire system is under vacuum and a dummy target, required for stable beam and various RILIS tests, is already in place. The GPS controls were reported not working at all or giving wrong read-out. The target table requires further small adjustments. In general, GPS should be ready soon. Once the front-end maintenance is finished, the Faraday cage will be closed, the target will be heated up and the HV will be switched on.

- ISOLDE dry-run will be organized soon to solve the issues with the GPS controls. Several different experts from various layers of controls (INCA, Feza etc) will work together with the ISOLDE operators in the control room.

- HRS 90º magnet was moved out completely in the morning. The suspected areas of the leak (around the RILIS window and the shutter box) have been inspected, however, no obvious leak has been found. The leak test will be organized within next couple of days. A new shutter box is currently being manufactured in the ISOLDE workshop and it will be ready to replace the old one already next week.

- Vacuum system is coming together. Many turbo controllers failed during the LS stop and they have to be replaced. All beam line elements (power supplies, interlocks etc.) have been checked out and maintained.

- The ISOLDE robots are not functional yet. Problems with welding of the water pipes for cooling the proton beam line have been reported. This impacts the work in the target area. If welding not done anytime soon, the robots will be tested in parallel with the work ongoing in this area.

Safety:

- Still no news about the safety and RP requirements for the summer students and ISOLDE physicists as of July 1.

- As announced previously, from July 1, 2014, the ISOLDE experimental hall will be divided into two parts (splitting caused by the HIE-ISOLDE works, not RP reclassification). In the high energy part (the extension hall) helmets and safety shoes will be obligatory. After several iterations, the consensus was found that in the low energy part helmets and safety shoes are recommended. The local group is thus requested to wear the safety shoes while working in the hall.

ISOLDE General:

- Reports from the permanent experiments in the hall:

o GHM: the EC-SLI experiment is ready for stable beam. At the beam line one turbo controller is broken and has to be exchanged.

o GLM: the SSP collection chamber was moved from LA1 back to the GLM beam line. Stepping motors have been exchanged and have to be tested and calibrated.

o CRIS: in good shape. Stable beam tuned through the entire setup. The decay station will be tested this and the next week. The DigiDAQ will be brought back from storage soon. The prototype of the LabVIEW programme for the vacuum controls is ready to be tested.

o COLLAPS: no news.

o ISOLTRAP: The setup is reconnected and the vacuum system is fully operational. The next step is finalizing the migration/reinstallation of the control system, for which Dennis Neidherr will come for a week from GSI, starting May 26th. Start-up of power supplies and off-line ion source is foreseen upon completion of this step.

o IDS: installation of the electricity box has finished. The setup has been moved closer to the beam line, based on the transport calculations done by the team. The alignment of the setup and the test of the vacuum are going on. Development on the DAQ is ongoing in Daresbury and Jyväskylä. First beam is scheduled for August 2014. o VITO: the UHV-ASPIC beam line was taken apart. Currently the team is waiting for the missing pieces (being manufactured in Portugal, delivery date: mid-June), pumps have been maintained, the power supplies have been checked and the new ones have been ordered, cabling already in place. Maintenance work on ASPIC chamber will start next week.

AOB:

- The ISOLDE theodolite was reported to be unreliable and it will be checked by the CERN survey team. More news will be given next week. - Please notice that the next meeting will take place on Wednesday May 28, 2014 at 14.00.
