Minutes from the ISOLDE Physics Group Meeting November 7, 2013

No comments to the minutes from the ISOLDE Physics Group Meeting from October 10, 2013.

TECHNICAL NEWS:

- The Linac vertical concrete walls are now in place. The excavation work connected to the shielding door is on-going right now.

- The retracing of the HIE-ISOLDE beam lines has been scheduled for this week.

- Works on the platform above NICOLE and IDS are proceeding. Several pillars were added to support the metallic floor installed for the platform and the stairs were moved towards the wall.

- The installation of the cables for the beam alarm system at ISOLDE is finalized.

- The cherry-picker machine was removed from the front of the control room.

- Additional cabling is still to be done in the HRS area.

- The water station will be soon installed back behind the control room. New pumps are supposed to be mounted at the beginning of the next week.

- The cooling unit for the bld. 199 has arrived.

- A little celebration about having ISOLDE first spare front end took place on Thursday, October 31st.

Target area:

- Different services are being taken out, so that new robots can be installed.

- The robots will be installed, as scheduled, by the end of this year.

- Smaller doses than approved by ALARA were reported in the intervention in the target area (nearly a factor of 20 less).

- The wall of the old hot-cell has been removed from bld. 179.

REX:

- The REX trap is working well.

- The Faraday cup in the trap FC10 is working well.

- The new RF amplifier for the REX-TRAP has arrived. RILIS:

- The laminar-flow boxes have been installed around laser tables. - Still no news about the RILIS hut extension.

- Several controls have been repaired in the off-line laboratory.

- The discussion about implementing the LIST controls in the ISOLDE control system is ongoing.

ISOLDE tape station:

- A new fast tape station for yields measurement will be ready for 2015.

- In the meantime the present tape station will be repaired before the running period 2014.

Bld. 508:

- The drawings of the new bld. 508 were finalized.

- The electrical grounding for the building will be done similarly to the one of ISOLDE and the grounds of the two buildings will be connected. Detailed plans are available at Magda’s office.

- The works connected to the concrete floor are now ongoing.

- The company responsible for the floor is taking the power directly from the hall. The cable is passing through the hall causing constant starting of the alarms. To be followed by Magda.

Safety:

- Last week the civil-engineering started for the MEDICIS project.

- The ventilation of the class A laboratory has been removed.

- Some works are on-going in the target area.

- It looks like that hard-huts will have to be used after LS1 in every experimental area, including ISOLDE. Magda will follow on that.

GENERAL ISOLDE:

- A power cut occurred in bld. 170 and 275 on Thursday, November 7. It was about 35 minutes long and was caused by a broken transformer. In case of any further distortions please call at 72101.

- A need for having a separate transformer for the experiments at the low energy beamlines (for electronics and detectors) at ISOLDE was discussed. For the moment it has been decided not to buy one because, since no big improvement is expected and ground loops can be created. Grounding properly the equipment might be enough to avoid noise problems.

- Users are advised not to remove the plastic foils covering their experiments for the moment due to still on-going works in the hall.

- The He leak-tester was repaired last week and already used the ISOLTRAP team. It is planned to lock it somewhere in the hall and keep the key in the control-room key cabinet.

- For the visit guides at ISOLDE: please sign up for the up-coming general introduction course for guides at CERN.

AOB:

- Erwin Siesling is away this and next week. Users are asked not to contact him during this time. Only if urgent, please send him an e-mail.

- ISOLDE has a possibility to host Finnish summer students who will be taking part in the summer school programme at CERN in 2014 (but they will be paid from additional Finnish funds). If you are interested in supervising a student please send a short project description to Magda asap.

- The ISCC committee meeting took place on October 22nd, followed by the INTC committee on October 23rd-24th. About 50% of the requested shifts were approved.

- Information about the INTC in February 2014 will be sent by Magda soon.

- Kara Lynch was awarded the IOP Early Carrier Award given every year in the field of nuclear physics.

- Everyone interested in taking part in the poster session during the ISOLDE Workshop is strongly encouraged to register for it.

- The bad Wi-Fi connection in bld. 26 is to be followed up.

- The meeting was followed by a seminar of Francesco Recchia on “the Structure of N~40 Ni isotopes studied by knock-out reactions”: https://indico.cern.ch/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=278813

- Next PG meeting will take place at the usual time and location.
