Minutes from the ISOLDE Physics Group Meeting August 28, 2013

No comments to the minutes from the ISOLDE Physics Group Meeting from August 2, 2013.

TECHNICAL NEWS:

- Rough cleaning has been done in the hall in order to allow for various measurements in the extension hall.

- Two leaks in the water system have been found in the hall: one next to the NICOLE and the decay station setups and the other one in the linac tunnel. The valve next to the experiments was repaired on Tuesday 27, and the one in the tunnel was fixed by Erwin Siesling.

- Works connected to the cable holes between bld. 119, 198 and bld. 170, which will serve the linac are still on-going. Two additional holes need to be drilled in the walls next to the mezzanine to allow for cable passage from the electronic racks towards linac.

- The key of the overhead crane is currently kept by Erwin. In case someone needs to use it, please contact Erwin directly.

- Works connected to the installation of the ventilation system for HIE-ISOLDE are in progress. For the moment, only the corner pieces are still missing.

- Bld. 115, 601 and 507 are gone. Now the company is flattening the surface in order to prepare it for the concrete floor.

- COLLAPS has been informed about the laser tube sticking out of the building 170. The collaboration has been asked to move it inside the hall if possible in order to avoid any damages.

- Richard Catherall got a second quotation for the cleaning of the hall. The first quote was 90 kCHF, now the second one is 9kEuros. The 3-persons cleaning team will be at our disposal for about one month. Magda and Richard will meet with the company in order to agree on final details of cleaning and the setup responsible will be informed of the outcome. Based on that meeting, users who don't want to have their setups cleaned should inform Magda. Info received after the meeting: the company will not use liquids, it is insured against damages, and it can start earliest on September 15th – 2 weeks later than hoped for.

- Physics group will share the time of being in the hall during the cleaning period in order to avoid any possible damages and to supervise the cleaning team. Schedule will be organized locally in the group.

- A. Dorsival reported on the results of the dry pre-pump tests installed in the HRS separator area which are supposed to replace the oil pre-pumps. The pumps were installed for a few weeks last year. Short- lived activity was measured right after the tests and now the long lived activity will be checked.

- It is still not clear when the RILIS extension will be installed. The company is currently closed for summer holidays.

- RILIS started working on the new design for the GPS launch system of the lasers. The team is also working on the Ba ionization scheme in the off-line lab. First results are expected by the end of September.

- Works in the target off-line lab (bldg. 3) are still on-going. Some noises, which might disturb work in the office area, are still expected.

- A. Dorsival reported on the studies of iodine released from the targets in 2012. The data will be passed to the target group in order to correlate it with the target types. Also data on long-lived alpha emitters will be analyzed.

- At 6am on September 3, there will be a simulated power cut for a few minutes.

- There is no cooling water in the experimental hall. A portable cooling station is being used for EBIS-REX.

- REX elements are being put under vacuum and the controls will be restarted next week, in order to allow various tests. GENERAL ISOLDE:

- Welcome back to Magda Kowalska, who returned from maternity leave.

- The ESS director was visiting the ISOLDE off-line facility in bldg. 3. Two more VIP visits are foreseen for the up-coming week: the Irish Ambassador to the UN and the director of VECC laboratory in Kolkata.

AOB:

- Workshop on Radioactive Ion Beam Production and High-Power Target Stations is held on September, 16-18 in SCK*CEN, Mol, Belgium (http://www.sckcen.be/Events/WS_ISOL_MYRRHA_SEPT).

- Magda Kowalska and Klaus Blaum attended the research board meeting at CERN on Wednesday 22. K. Blaum gave a presentation about the physics activities and program at ISOLDE.

- The meeting was followed by five summer student seminars: Jerzy Szuniewicz (high-school), Valerie Augustyn, Vasil Karayonchev, Bos Jeroen and Joao Silva

- Next PG meeting will take place at the usual place and time. No seminar is foreseen for that day.
