Minutes from the ISOLDE Physics Group Meeting 18 July 2013

No comments to the minutes from the ISOLDE Physics Group Meeting from 11 July 2013.

TECHNICAL NEWS:

  • Works connected to cutting of the trench in the hall should finish this week.
  • It was suggested that the cleaning of the hall will be done in February 2014, when all the works in the hall are finished. After some discussion, the cleaning will be done in September 2013 after the major works in the hall are over. Everyone planning to work at the experimental setup should remember that there still will be a few activities on-going in the hall which might produce dust, such as construction of the extension of the RILIS cage (starting in October 2013).
  • The discussion on dividing the hall into two parts is still on-going. It was suggested that the hall could be divided into two zones: one where the helmets and safety shoes are required and one where they are not needed anymore. Due to the works in the 170 hall, the final decision on this matter will be done in September 2013.
  • Valentine reported on the progress of works connected to RILIS:
  1. The carbon layer formed on the laser window which reduces the efficiency of RILIS lasers was addressed. The team considers two possible solutions to avoid entering the target zone: either an automatic system to flash the windows with ozone or have clean air in the region.
  2. Before the general start-up of the facility the laser window will be exchanged.
  • The need of having annual safety inspections in the primary area was discussed.  It was suggested that an exemption could be implemented.
  • The HIE-ISOLDE workshop will be held on 28th and 29th November 2013, following the ISOLDE workshop and Users Meeting (25th – 27th November 2013).

GENERAL ISOLDE:

  • Preparations of the metallic mezzanine (between the two extensions) will start next week.
  • Approval for the demolition of the bld. 115, 507 and 601 was done. The works have already started and will take approx. 45 days (till the end of August).
  • All users are requested to determine whether or not their setups are sensitive to the Electro-Magnetic Interferences (EMI) or any other perturbation expected from the HIE-ISOLDE equipment and electronics (see the email sent by Maria on 18th of July 2013). The permanent installations around the mezzanine are of special concern: TAGS, ISOLTRAP, NICOLE and the decay station. Feedback should be sent to Maria as soon as possible. For any questions related to possible noise, please contact Michele Martino (Michele.Martino@cern.ch, tel: 74171) and questions regarding the beamlines and the transmission: Brennan Goddard (Brennan.Goddard@cern.ch, tel: 75484).

AOB:

  • Prof. Richard Casten (Yale University) will give a series of four nuclear physics lectures from 23rd – 26th July 2013 in the BE Auditorium Meyrin at 2pm. https://indico.cern.ch/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=252938. The summer students are encouraged to prepare a few questions regarding each seminar, which will then be discussed before the next lecture.
  • Kim Kreim, Max-Planck Institute, Heidelberg, Germany, defended his PhD thesis on Tuesday 16th July 2013. He will give a short presentation at ISOLDE on Wednesday, 31st July, entitled “Collinear Laser Spectroscopy of Potassium: Nuclear Charge Radii beyond N=28” followed by a coffee and a cake.
  • Dmitry Kisler, a new PhD student, has joined the ISOLRAP team for 3 years.
  • The last meeting was followed by the seminar of Dr. Thomas Elias Cocolios from University of Manchester, UK.
  • There will be no PG meeting on Thursday 26th July 2013.
  • Next PG meeting will take place on Thursday 1st August 2013 at the usual place and time and it will be followed by two seminars:
  1. Dr. Tetsuya K. Sato (Advanced Science Research Center) on “1st experimental determination of ionization potential of Lawrencium (Z=103) by a surface ionization technique” https://indico.cern.ch/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=258918
  2. 1st summer student seminar by Alexander Fragapane.
