1. Technical and experimental news:
· Last week run at GPS with a molten led target and a plasma ion source VADIS was very successful. There had been a concern about the successful operation of this target-ion-source combination, but the yields of mercury exceeded the expectations. Measurements have been performed by IS488 and I81 experiments. The first one aims at studying the influence of heavy metals on bio samples, the other investigates a possible methodology for purifying water from heavy elements. Yield checks for this target have been performed today.
· After the molten led target a UC carbide target will be installed at GPS for the upcoming run with collinear laser spectroscopy on 12Be.
· Regardless of if the accelerator complex will be shut down in 2012 or 2013 the GPS frontend will be replaced at the next shutdown period (2010-2011).
· MINIBALL uses presently 44Ar beam at HRS to study the excited states in 46Ar populated in a transfer reaction from a 3H target.
· The “watch dog” for monitoring the proton-beam losses has been tested successfully and it allows parallel operation of staggered beam on GPS and normal beam on HRS.
2. Safety:
· There were some minor contaminations in the solid-state lab during the GPS run. A better procedure to handle liquid samples is under investigation.
· Following a radiation alarm last week, we are all reminded that the light alarm in the control room lights up if any of the monitors in the hall shows a higher radiation level. The level of all monitors can be seen in the ISOLDE controls PC and the location of the monitors is shown on printouts in the control room. A more transparent solution is investigated.
· ISOLDE access: following problems of some users last week, in case of trouble with RP course, dosimeter, or access request please contact the coordinator. Related information is present at the ISOLDE website.
3. A.O.B:
· There will be a call for proposals for the INTC in February 2011. The deadline for submissionfor the November INTC is October 8-th.
· The deadline for submitting documents for the ISOLDE workshopis October 10-th.
· ISOLDE gets praised in the ISOLDE bulletin: Word from the DG
· Liquid N2 deliveries: regardless of the official statement, the driver tells us that Mondays and Wednesdays are almost impossible for him. However, in case of real emergency we can call his mobile (Magda has the number).
· The ISOLDE kitchen is getting again messy: Please clean after yourself.
· Thomas Roger (IKS - KULeuven) presented “Study of two-neutron transfer reaction and resonant elastic scattering induced by 11Li, with the MAYA active target”.
