1. Technical news:
· Last week RILIS performed a successful test on Sm ionization. Surface ionization yields 8% efficiency. RILIS effectively doubles that amount. The produced Sm beams are reported to be relatively clean. This was the first ISOLDE run this year and it is a success.
· The first radioactive beams on HRS this year were produced for the collinear laser spectroscopy of Ga at COLLAPS. Apart from anticipated difficulties associated with the first use of the machine and in particular ISCOOL there was also a problem with the bender in the GPS/HRS merging switch yard. Thanks to the adequate actions of the technical group and our new coordinator IS457 could run, but not under optimal conditions. Measurements fom70Ga down to 63Ga were possible addressing the corresponding physics. 65Ga and 67Ga were not measured due to the danger of contamination of the switch yard, where 50% of the beam was lost.
· LIST target has been installed at GPS for tests with Mg and collections on 27Mg. SSP is expected to benefit from the low 27Al contamination expected with theLIST.
· A ThCx target has been installed at HRS for a beta delayed fission experiment. In the mean time the problem with the switch yard seems to have been repaired.
· Apparently there is a problem with closing the valves of targets after use. Looking for a solution.
· The new FC system performs well. The problem with occasional random readings has been solved by Gerrit Jan Focker and will be implemented soon.
· REX trap and REX EBIS are operational. The new REX-trap controls also work properly. The LINAC is under vacuum as established by turbo pumps. Cryopumping should be initiated next week. Testing the RF waits for high vacuum.
· RILIS is in a good shape after successful runs on Sm, Ga and currently Mg.
2. A.O.B.:
· There will be a crane course on the 20-21 of June. Please, inform Magda if you would like to be on the list.
· Piet pointed out difficulties with moving sources needed by experiments in and out of ISOLDE. Magda and Yorick will discuss the problem with Doris Forkel-Wirth.
· There will be Dutch students visiting ISOLDE on Wednesday 18/5 at 9am. Yorick, Piet and Thomas will guide.
· Finish students will visit on May 31. Two guides are needed.
· Two students working at ISOLTRAP have been introduced. Vladimir, who will start a PhD in the Group of Dave Lunney (CSNSM - Orsay) and Tina - an exchange high - school student from Germany.
· Old posters are planned to be removed from the walls of ISOLDE. Contact Piet about your posters.
· Piet proposed the HIE-ISOLDE logo to become a universal ISOLDE logo. None commented so far.
3. Seminars:
· Rick Casten (Yale University) gave a lecture on the IBA model and giant pairing vibration.
· Next week Jan Kurcewicz (GSI) will speak about “Studies of the EC and bound-state beta- decays at the FRS-ESR”. Jan is our preferred candidate for an applied fellowship to work on digital data acquisition.
· For more information and links to the slides please visit the ISOLDE - seminars page.
