5 October 2011

1. Technical news:

· The robots handling the targets lost calibration immediately after the power cut last week. The current hypothesis assumes that this is caused by their battery pack, which does not seem to kick in quickly enough to preserve the calibration. The issue is being investigated.

· The HRS cage actuator will to be replaced tomorrow with a spare.

· Turbo-pump problems on LA1 and GLM have been solved.

· The CC0.FC90 Faraday cup has been fixed. A loose connection for the signal has been found and absence of suppression voltage as well.

· Test of the air conditioning at the RILIS cabin has been conducted. For this, all RILIS lasers had to be turned on. To some extent this resulted in instabilities in the Ni ionization efficiency.

· The 2nd operation on the REX-EBIS cathode was successful and since Thursday evening REX has provided beam to MINIBALL. The yields of 66Ni are very good due to new RILIS ionization scheme, although the REX efficiency for 66Ni is rather low. In addition, there have been problems with the 7 -gap resonator during the weekend.

2.Physics and schedule:

· MINIBALL has been acquiring statistics on 66Ni two-neutron transfer to 68Ni. It is possible that the physics aim is reached, in spite of the delay at the start. During REX interruptions due to technical problems, IS453 stepped in with the continuation of online emission-channeling measurements at GHM implanting 65Ni in different hosts and making important discoveries. The SSP team thanks everybody for the support.

· Later this week there will be target and RILIS tests with a Ir/Ta/W foil target at HRS. For the aim of the production of surface- and laser-ionized rare earth nuclei, in particular for an accepted ISOLTRAP proposal devoted to masses of 168,170Dy and 178,180Yb.

3.Safety:

· The 10Bq tritium target has been installed at MINIBALL last week without problems.

· There has been an optimization in the ALARA procedure, which now should be more efficient.

4.A.O.B.

· Phil Walker (U. of Surrey) joins the ISOLDE team as associate for minimum of six months.

· The final deadline for the ISOLDE workshop abstract submission is Oct 10-th (next Monday).

· New members of the ISOLDE technical team introduced themselves at the meeting: Alex (handling radioactive waste), Michal (CATHI fellow for target development), Mat (CATHI fellow), Andrea (technical student on safety), NaTan (safety-risk analysis).

· CRIS welcomes a new student (Hossein).

5. Seminars:

· Dr. Elisa Rapisarda (Instituut voor Kern- en Stralingsfysica, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven) presented: “Shell and shape effects investigated at (REX) ISOLDE”. Elisa is a candidate for a CERN fellowship.

· Tomorrow there will be a seminar by Dr. Freddy Flavigny (CEA-Saclay / IRFU / SphN) at 11:00 in 304-1-001. Title: “Extraction of absolute spectroscopic factors from knockout and transfer reactions on light exotic nuclei”. Freddy is also a candidate for a CERN fellowship.

· On Friday at 11:00 we will have a physics coffee by Bjorn Jonson, who is a member of the Nobel-prize committee. Bjorn will tell us about the last Nobel Prize in Physics. Please, bring your own chair. The seminar will take place in the ISOLDE visitors room.

· For more information and links to the slides please visit the ISOLDE - seminars page.
