11 July 2012

There were no comments to the minutes from 4.7.2012.

Main Technical News:

  • On GPS with target Ta-W #482 installed, the double-peak structure was seen again for different masses. Tuning the QP triplet removed it this time. Also, YGPS.FC490 showed the same reading at YCA0.FC68, which used to be a factor of 2 lower. The reason is not clear.
  • Yield measurements of Be-12 ongoing.
  • On HRS, the target UCx-Ta #480 had been kept from the last run on HRS. There were several problems while setting up the separator and ISCOOL for light masses at 60kV. Finally, only 10% transmission through the cooler at 40kV could be provided to the experiment with a yield of Be-11 of about 100 less than expected. Also problems with HRS watchdog disturbed the run.
  • The proton scan was double-checked and fine, the RFQ transmission problem is being investigated, since at 40kV for heavy masses the transmission is about 65%.
  • The low yield of beryllium might arise from bad laser ionization due to a coated separator window or from the ionizer of the target, which looked strange during an optical check with RILIS theodolite.

REX/RILIS:

  • A power glitch on Thursday evening cut the EBIS power. The oxygen inlet valve was not closed, causing bad vacuum. , The EBIS was restarted Monday and it will take a few days until good vacuum is re-established, during which time more C contaminant can be expected.
  • The difficulties with light beams at the low-energy part of REX might be due to recent changes in controls. Frederik is trying to run in “manual mode”.
  • The fast protection valve of the LINAC doesn’t work properly at the moment.
  • REX is preparing for a 12Be run.
  • RILIS is still providing Be beams, now for GPS.

Other Technical News:

  • The fast user beam gate is back from repair.
  • The watchdog kept signaling fake proton losses probably due to a faulty cable. Since this cannot be repaired during running period, a second watchdog closer to the PSB will be reactivated.

Physics/Schedule:

  • The experiment IS 495 on Sm finished successfully.
  • Maria gave an overview over the physics case of the Be-11 experiment. Since the beam was provided only on Friday night and with low yield, not enough time remained for IS 541 to collect enough statistics and the IS541 team surrendered the beam. The beam was given to CRIS who implemented a new FC and tested it successfully.
  • Experiments IS 520 will now run at MINIBALL on Be-12, with occasional emission-channeling on Be-11 at GHM (IS453).
  • The schedule of the third trimester has been released, spokespersons of experiments involved have been informed.
  • The injectors will be running until 17.12 so we will look into possibly prolonging the ISOLDE running period.
  • In 2013, only LHC will get beam.

Safety:

  • There is an Isobutane bottle installed at the second beam line of REX for the MAYA detector. Since this is flammable and explosive, respective safety measures have been taken. Please avoid the area around the bottle and the experiment.

AOB:

  • Next Wednesday, the annual safety inspection of ISOLDE will take place. Please sort your equipment and throw out cardboard and wooden items.
  • All summer students have arrived at ISOLDE and introduced themselves.

Presentation:

-There was a presentation by Sofia Quaglioni on “Ab initio calculations of light-ion fusion reactions ”.

- Next week there will be a presentation by Daisuke Suzuki on “Active gas target project at Michigan State University: toward more versatile and selective studies of radioactive beam reactions”http://indico.cern.ch/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=197680 .
