CLAUDE LEON FOUNDATION POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS:
PROJECTS AVAILABLE IN NUCLEAR STRUCTURE AND NUCLEAR ASTROPHYSICS @ THE UNIVERSITY OF THE WESTERN CAPE

The flagship educational initiative of the Claude Leon Foundation is the Postdoctoral Fellowship programme in the sciences, now in its twentieth year. The main goal of the programme is to help build research capacity in South African universities and research institutions. The Foundation funds both South African and foreign postdoctoral scientists in Science, Engineering and Medical Sciences to increase the volume and quality of research output, develop and transfer technical skills, and generally enhance the research culture in South Africa.
Applications for fellowships are considered on a competitive basis and are open to all South Africa’s tertiary institutions. The awards are for two years and from 2017 are valued at R275,000.00 per year; fellows can also apply for relocation costs from abroad, and support for international conference attendance.
Since its inception the Foundation has spent approximately R165 million on the programme and supported over 535 postdoctoral fellows. The largest beneficiaries of the programme to date have been the Universities of Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Witwatersrand and Pretoria.

Research Projects need to be submitted with the Claude Leon application and these are readily available in Nuclear Structure and Nuclear Astrophysics at the University of the Western Cape (UWC). The post-doctoral fellows can be involved in our Coulomb-excitation, lifetime, K600 spectrometer and b-decay programs ongoing at iThemba LABS (Cape Town), Munich Spectrometer (MLL), TRIUMF and HIE-ISOLDE (CERN). We are seeking for strong, dynamic and enthusiastic candidates with excellent communication, writing and computing skills (C++ and ROOT are prerequisites). The Nuclear Physics and Nuclear Astrophysics Group at the University of the Western Cape is composed of over 50 members, mainly black South African students (Honours, MSc and PhD levels) from historically disadvantaged backgrounds.
