Postdoctoral Fellow Position in Nuclear Structure Physics

An immediate opening is available for a 2 years Post-Doctoral Fellow position at the University of the Western Cape (UWC). The candidate will be involved in our Coulomb-excitation, lifetime and -decay programs ongoing at iThemba LABS (Cape Town) and HIE-ISOLDE (CERN). The scientific goal is elucidating timely topics in nuclear structure physics and nuclear astrophysics by determining transitional and diagonal matrix elements. The candidate should be dynamic, enthusiastic and possess excellent communication, writing and computing skills (C++ and ROOT are prerequisites). Previous experience in radioactive ion beam facilities is necessary – in particular, experience working at REX-ISOLDE and MINIBALL will be advantageous. The Nuclear Physics and Nuclear Astrophysics Group at the University of the Western Cape is composed of over 50 members, mainly black South African students (Honours, MSc and PhD levels) from historically disadvantaged backgrounds. Specific responsibilities will include:

Student training, i.e, support with computing and hands-on skills

Setting up experiments at iThemba LABS and HIE-ISOLDE

Learning Coulomb-excitation theory and applications (e.g., GOSIA)

Proposing your own experiments
