The meeting starts at 09.00 h

1. Introductory remarks by the chairman

The chairman welcomes the committee members to the meeting.

2. Approval of the minutes of the 42nd meeting.

The minutes are approved without any changes.

3. News from the AB Department (M. Lindroos)

M. Lindroos summarizes the work done and the developments made at ISOLDE and REX-ISOLDE during the shutdown (see presentation). The committee is shown the new front end, which has a removable front section making replacement costs much lower, and hears how the start of the run has progressed.

It is announced that the hall extension is now complete and the re-organization of the technical support is then described. J. Lettry is now the AB-ATB group leader and R. Catherall has taken over from him as AB-ATB-IF section leader. Also the AB budget for technical support at ISOLDE will be increased by a factor of 10 to 250kCHF in 2006.

4. Schedule (L. Fraile)
L. Fraile shows details of the schedule for the 2005 run (see presentation) which will be reduced, compared to 2003 and 2004, to 25 weeks. He informs the committee that there are 579 outstanding shifts from 2004 and 130 were approved in the first INTC meeting in 2005. Hence, about 700 shifts have to be scheduled of which 32% are for REX-ISOLDE. Users have requested 500 of these shifts for 2005.

The schedules for the GPS and HRS, which are to be operated in pull/push mode, are presented. It is noted that this and other useful information related to the schedule is available via the ISOLDE web page http://www.cern.ch/isolde/. This year’s first runs are then summarized.

L. Fraile goes on to inform the committee that:

  • DHCP (dynamic IP) and wireless network are now available in the ISOLDE hall; users should register their computer and network card.
  • For Data transfer to CASTOR, ftp to wacdr has been closed and so, from outside CERN, gridFTP should now be used.
  • The next INTC meeting will be held 31st October/1st November 2005.

5. Runs in 2006 (M. Lindroos)

M. Lindroos presents the draft schedule for the 2006 run. Protons will be available from 18th April to 17th December which means that physics could start at ISOLDE on 24th April and that the run could be longer than usual.

6. Collaboration finances (P. Butler)

The ISOLDE collaboration budget for 2003-2008 is shown by P. Butler.

7. Fellowships and staff appointments (M. Lindroos and P. Butler)

P. Butler reviews recent staffing appointments:

  • Fellows -
At present there are two fellows in the ISOLDE Physics group (G. Georgiev and H. Jeppesen). There will be four good candidates at the next application round. A decision is due 31st May.
There are two good applicants for Marie-Curie Fellowships; a decision is expected at the end of May.
    P. Delahaye, who was an applied fellow funded by 3 JRAs in EURONS, has been given a EURISOL post and so the money from the JRAs will now be used to ‘pumpprime’ research and applied fellowships.
  • EURONS -
The Trans-national Access money has been used to fund a 50% scientific administration post and a 3 year LD staff post.
  • EURISOL -
Three EURISOL funded posts have now been filled; P. Delahaye, E. Noah (Target development) and A. Fabich (Beta beams).

8. EURONS (P. Butler)

P. Butler informs the committee that Trans-national Access funds are now available to financially support Users coming to ISOLDE and that the application procedure to be followed by the experiment spokesperson can be found via the ISOLDE web site. He explains that, if most of the experiment collaboration is from the EU, individuals from outside the EU can qualify for this financial support if they have a contract with an institute in the EU.

The application procedure will become more formal in 2006 when a selection panel will decide who receives the funding.

9. EURISOL Design Study (M. Lindroos)

M. Lindroos informs the committee that:

  • At CERN, T. Stora and E. Noah will work on the Direct Target Study while Y. Kadi takes on the study of the Fission Fragment Target.
  • The Coordination and Management Board will be held in Liverpool on 8th July 2005.
  • A EURISOL week will be held at GANIL; the open days of which will be 28-29 November 2005.

P. Butler mentions that the list of large research infrastructures which are eligible for funding within the 7th Framework is now available on the web and that EURISOL will apply for construction costs towards the end of the decade.

10. Application for the lasers for RILIS (M. Lindroos and B. Jonson)

M. Lindroos presents details of the funding application made in Sweden. An amount of 9000K SEK has been requested for 2006 and 7320K SEK for 2007. This money would allow the replacement of the copper vapour lasers and, later, the di-lasers. A decision is expected in October 2005.

11. HIE-ISOLDE (P. Butler and M. Lindroos)

HIE-ISOLDE stands for the high intensity and energy upgrade of ISOLDE from 2006 to 2011 and its objectives are:

  • To benefit from injector upgrades at CERN
  • To increase the energy and intensity of REX-ISOLDE
  • To improve the beam quality at ISOLDE.

The committee is told by M. Lindroos that a memo about this project was sent to CERN department heads the week before this meeting and that a full presentation will be made at the NuPAC meeting in October. He then presents the costing of this project; a budget of 15 million Swiss francs will be required (10 million from CERN and 5 million from external sources). It is shown where the external funds will be applied for and the status of these applications.

12. INTC matters (J. Äystö)

J. Äystö tells the committee that all the proposals presented to the last research board were approved and then goes on to mention the proposals which will be presented at the next INTC meeting.

13. NUPAC meeting (J. Äystö)

J. Äystö mentions that a, by invitation only, meeting of NuPAC (Nuclear Physics and Astrophysics at CERN) will be held at CERN the 10-12 October 2005. A report will be produced from this meeting in October/November which will be taken to the research board and will steer the nuclear physics programme at CERN for the next ten years.

14. A.O.B.

- The date of the next ISOLDE workshop is discussed.

- B. Jonson reminds the committee that his term as collaboration chairman will soon come to an end. Hence, the committee decides that a selection panel made up of K. Riisager, M. Lindroos and J. Kluge (to be confirmed) should, after discussing with the user community, choose the next ISOLDE chairman.

- M. Lindroos announces that the NIC-IX conference will be held at CERN from 25th to 30th June 2006.

- The committee is informed by P. Butler that, after the MMW workshop, CERN has set up two committees, PAF - Proton Accelerators for the Future (Roland Garoby) and POFPA – Physics Opportunities for Future Proton Accelerators, which will produce interim reports in 2006 and full reports in 2009.

- B. Jonson thanks P. Butler for his time as ISOLDE Physics group leader and wishes him good luck for the future.

The meeting ends at 11:45h
